The Urban Agriculture Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing, implementing, and enhancing educational initiatives related to the food growing areas managed by the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), including its Urban Demonstration Garden.

This Urban Demonstration Garden serves as a dynamic, hands-on educational facility, spanning half an acre, designed to foster understanding of wellness, nutrition, and urban food cultivation among CAFB's partners, clients, and the broader community.

The indoor and outdoor garden spaces, along with the Urban Food Studio, are utilized collaboratively to demonstrate effective urban food growing methods, emphasizing cost-effective gardening practices.


Key Responsibilities:


Oversee and manage all aspects of garden maintenance operations within CAFB's garden spaces (60%):
- Cultivate, harvest, and distribute fresh produce while integrating food growing and nutrition education into CAFB's programming.
- Handle daily and seasonal operations of the garden and outdoor kitchen, including planning and scheduling tasks such as mulching, soil amendments, seed starting, planting, crop rotation, and weeding.

- Manage garden-related expenses and track budgets, ensuring proper allocation of funds for partner support and grant utilization.
- Supervise food growing and nutrition education interns, providing guidance for garden assistance and program support.
- Implement sustainable gardening practices and food waste diversion strategies, promoting waste reduction through composting and educational initiatives.

- Direct and coordinate individual volunteers and volunteer groups effectively, leading multiple shifts of volunteers throughout the growing season.


Identify and organize various volunteer opportunities, both seasonal and long-term, and facilitate collaboration across CAFB to host diverse groups in the garden and outdoor kitchen space.

Develop and execute comprehensive food growing educational programs and resources aimed at urban food cultivation and expanding garden opportunities (40%):
- Lead nutrition-focused garden education and food preparation field trips for students from K-12 to college levels.
- Design and conduct educational workshops, both publicly accessible and tailored for specific groups such as food pantry partners, at CAFB and partner sites, available in-person and virtually.

- Evaluate program effectiveness, track outcomes, and conduct research on best practices for nutrition-based garden education aligned with CAFB's mission.
- Provide support for partner gardens through consultation visits, educational resources, and distribution of materials such as seeds and nutrition education tools.

- Identify and pursue new garden programming opportunities for CAFB, including project estimation and proposal writing for potential initiatives.

- Collaborate with various departments to enhance garden engagement opportunities in line with CAFB's broader mission, including volunteers, operations, marketing, and fundraising.

- Foster and strengthen professional relationships with local gardens, non-profits, agricultural organizations, schools, and other stakeholders.

- Participate in local garden and nutrition events, presenting information to various groups of interest.

- Assist with performance data analysis (financial, grant, and activity reports) to assess productivity and progress towards goals.
- Perform data entry as needed and undertake additional duties as assigned.
