General Overview of Responsibilities

This position involves protective service duties aimed at enforcing regulations, monitoring designated areas, investigating unlawful activities, serving legal documents, and ensuring public safety. The role requires maintaining accurate records, preparing detailed reports, and testifying in legal proceedings. The Deputy Sheriff operates under moderate supervision from a designated supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Patrol assigned areas in a marked vehicle to identify law violations, suspicious behavior, and disturbances.
  2. Respond to emergency calls, assess situations, and take appropriate legal actions.
  3. Conduct investigations of minor traffic incidents and report hazardous conditions.
  4. Serve legal documents such as warrants and subpoenas, and provide testimony in court.
  5. Conduct thorough investigations of criminal activities, interview victims and witnesses, and secure evidence.
  6. Make critical decisions in high-pressure situations to ensure the safety of all involved.
  7. Enforce traffic regulations and assist motorists as needed.
  8. Collaborate with external agencies to provide law enforcement support.
  9. Maintain equipment and vehicles in optimal condition.
  10. Respond to public inquiries and provide necessary guidance or referrals.
  11. Transport individuals to various appointments and facilities as required.
  12. Promote a culture of excellent customer service within the community.

Specific Duties Related to Courts

  1. Ensure security and order within the courthouse and courtroom environments.
  2. Protect judges, court staff, and the public visiting the courthouse.
  3. Screen individuals entering the facility to prevent the introduction of prohibited items.
  4. Monitor compliance with courthouse regulations and manage security equipment.
  5. Address disruptions in court and manage individuals as necessary.
  6. Handle the transportation of inmates and assist court officials.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive understanding of law enforcement practices, local geography, and applicable laws. Proficient in the use of firearms and defensive equipment. Ability to follow instructions, prepare clear reports, and interact effectively with the public under stress. Strong analytical skills to assess situations and make sound decisions quickly.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to exert varying degrees of physical force, with regular demands for speaking, hearing, and manual dexterity. The position involves exposure to outdoor conditions and may require the use of personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements

Must possess Georgia State Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification and maintain compliance with ongoing training requirements.
