General Purpose of the Role

The individual in this position is responsible for providing protective services within the correctional facility. Duties include managing inmate processing, ensuring the security of the facility, escorting inmates to various appointments, and preparing necessary documentation. This role operates under the moderate supervision of the Detention Corporal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the safety and security of inmates within the detention center.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections, perform head counts, and search for contraband.
  • Process inmates into custody, including searching and managing personal belongings.
  • Escort and transport inmates to court, medical, and other appointments as required.
  • Oversee the distribution of medications and meals, as well as approved inmate visitations.
  • Manage inmate correspondence and provide personal hygiene items according to established protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports and records, ensuring data is entered into the computer system as needed.
  • Foster a culture of exceptional customer service within the facility.

  • Understanding of security protocols, regulations, and procedures within correctional facilities.
  • Familiarity with modern penology practices related to inmate supervision and care.
  • Ability to enforce institutional rules consistently and fairly.
  • Capability to identify potential behavioral issues among inmates.
  • Proficiency in following oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Skills in supervising large groups of inmates and preparing comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to utilize defensive tactics and apply reasonable force when necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with colleagues, inmates, and the public.

Education and Experience Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands

This position requires regular physical exertion, including lifting up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. The role involves standing, walking, and the ability to communicate effectively. Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are necessary, along with the capacity to work in moderately noisy environments.

Special Requirements

Availability for emergency call-in is essential. Candidates must obtain Georgia Basic Jail Officer certification within six months of employment. A favorable background check is required, along with a valid driver's license in the State of Georgia.
