Position Overview

This role is a full-time, year-round position that reports to the Director of Operations at the Cloquet Forestry Center. It encompasses a variety of responsibilities related to forest management and research, including the establishment, upkeep, and assessment of forest research sites, tree planting and protection, as well as various vegetation management techniques such as mechanical, chemical, and fire-based methods. The technician will also engage in fire prevention and suppression activities, maintain forest roads, conduct timber assessments, and perform forest health evaluations.


Key Responsibilities
  • Forest Research Support (40%): Assist in the setup, maintenance, and monitoring of experimental plots under the guidance of the Research Coordinator or project leader. Responsibilities include organizing and digitizing historical and current research records, analyzing data to support forest management decisions, and managing weather station data in accordance with established protocols.
  • Forest Stewardship (35%): Gather and manage data related to forest inventories, contributing to the development of stewardship plans that align with broader resource management strategies. Responsibilities include planting and safeguarding tree seedlings, executing vegetation control measures, and overseeing forest road maintenance.
  • Outreach and Education (10%): Coordinate and manage outreach initiatives such as educational tours and conservation events, contributing to the communication efforts of the Cloquet Forestry Center.
  • Safety Officer Duties (10%): Develop and maintain safety plans, schedule training sessions, and conduct inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • General Support (5%): Maintain inventory records for forest management and research equipment, ensuring that resources are available for educational and research purposes.

Qualifications

Required: A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling six years in Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in ecological study implementation and possess knowledge of forest management tools and software.

Preferred: Familiarity with northern forest ecosystems, experience working with Indigenous Nations, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
