New York, New York, United States Citigroup Inc Full time
Position: Credit Officer, Commercial Lending Management

Overview

Citi's US Commercial Bank (CCB) is experiencing significant growth, focusing on emerging, mid-sized, and larger enterprises with annual revenues typically ranging from $100 million to $3 billion. To support the wholesale lending operations of CCB, the Commercial Lending Management (CLM) team functions as an in-business credit division, structured around strategic industries and a global market approach. CLM is pivotal in the client delivery model for CCB, transforming industry insights, product expertise, and comprehensive credit relationship management into top-tier lending solutions. We are looking for a proactive and skilled credit professional to become part of the US CLM Services team.

Role Responsibilities

The CLM Credit Officer oversees the complete lending process for a designated industry vertical, collaborating with a team of credit specialists. CLM is crucial for delivering a diverse array of financial solutions to Citi CCB clients, working closely with Relationship Managers and Independent Risk to achieve both the firm's and clients' financial goals. This includes providing working capital solutions, term loans, M&A financing, treasury and liquidity management services, foreign exchange, trade finance, and interest rate derivatives. The primary duties of CLM encompass credit underwriting, due diligence, structuring, documentation, and portfolio oversight.

The CLM Credit Officer is accountable for approving and managing significant credit risk associated with various lending products tailored for commercial banking relationships. This role is essential in the pre-screening of potential opportunities with Relationship Management, assessing credit appetite, identifying critical issues, and offering structuring insights on financing options. The officer will also maintain ongoing credit oversight of lending portfolio relationships through regular reviews and monitoring.

The assigned industry or specialty vertical demands a thorough understanding of the specific sector/product drivers and key performance indicators necessary for informed credit underwriting decisions and proactive portfolio management. The CLM Credit Officer provides insights into sectors and sub-segments for key stakeholders, contributes to industry-specific risk assessments, and leads credit evaluations for new originations and portfolio requests.

Key Duties
  • Manage the end-to-end lending process within the US CCB for assigned relationships and portfolios.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the assigned portfolio and industry, articulating a well-supported credit perspective that balances risk and business objectives.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and minimize credit losses for the covered portfolio while identifying emerging concerns for escalation.
  • Accountable for decision-making using credit approval authority in conjunction with Independent Risk.
  • Oversee the analysis and workflow of underwriting requests for new and existing credit relationships, including pre-screening, amendments, extensions, and annual reviews.
  • Lead the timely preparation of financial reviews for existing borrowers to monitor compliance with loan covenants and address potential issues.
  • Supervise the loan documentation process for new transactions and modifications, ensuring all credit approval terms are accurately reflected.
  • Conduct periodic client interactions for all portfolio clients and select new opportunities in collaboration with the Relationship Manager.
  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of various credit products and services available to CCB clients.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff to enhance their effectiveness as future Credit Officers and Bankers.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and controls.
  • Collaborate constructively with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate transaction progress while adhering to appropriate controls.
Qualifications
  • Proven credit underwriting executive with substantial expertise in the Services industry, particularly in commercial and cross-border lending.
  • 5+ years of experience in credit underwriting, portfolio, or risk management within a large multinational financial services organization.
  • Strong understanding of intermediate accounting principles and their application in credit underwriting.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, and listening) with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong credit acumen and the ability to articulate a well-informed perspective across various credit products, with skills in early problem identification and resolution.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and skill development.
  • Ability to make timely and transparent decisions, knowing when sufficient information is available to make sound judgments.
  • Proficient in spreadsheet and word processing applications.
  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degrees and certifications are a plus.
