New York, New York, United States Citigroup Inc Full time
Position: Commercial Lending Management - Credit Officer, Services, VP

Overview

Citi's US Commercial Bank (CCB) is experiencing significant growth, focusing on emerging, mid-sized, and larger enterprises with annual revenues typically ranging from $100 million to $3 billion. To support the CCB's wholesale lending operations, the Commercial Lending Management (CLM) team functions as an in-business credit entity, organized around strategic industries and a global market approach. CLM is pivotal in the client delivery model for the CCB, converting industry insights, product expertise, and comprehensive credit relationship management into top-tier lending solutions. We are looking for a proactive and skilled credit professional to become part of the US CLM Services team.

The CLM Credit Officer oversees the complete lending process for a designated industry vertical, collaborating with a team of credit specialists. CLM is crucial for delivering a broad spectrum of financial solutions to Citi CCB clients, working closely with Relationship Managers and Independent Risk to fulfill both the firm's and clients' business goals. This may encompass working capital solutions, term loans, M&A financing, treasury and liquidity management services, foreign exchange, trade finance, and interest rate derivatives. The main responsibilities of CLM include credit underwriting, due diligence, structuring and documentation, and portfolio monitoring. In partnership with relationship coverage bankers, CLM teams conduct thorough, objective evaluations of borrowers' financial conditions and creditworthiness, considering current industry sector and product/market conditions, as well as the appropriate credit structure based on various risk factors.

The CLM Credit Officer is accountable for approving and managing a significant amount of credit risk associated with capital allocated across diverse lending products suitable for commercial banking relationships. This role is essential in the preliminary assessment of pipeline opportunities with Relationship Management to evaluate credit appetite and identify critical issues, providing structuring insights on financing options, leading internal analytical efforts, and discussions on credit approvals, while maintaining ongoing credit oversight of lending portfolio relationships through regular reviews and monitoring as needed. The assigned industry/specialty vertical demands extensive knowledge of unique sector/product drivers and key performance indicators to make informed credit underwriting decisions and proactively manage the portfolio in a dynamic environment. The CLM Credit Officer offers sector and sub-segment insights for key stakeholders, contributes to industry-specific risk and portfolio content, including industry-level portfolio assessments, and leads credit-specific risk evaluations on new originations and portfolio requests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the complete lending process within the US CCB for assigned relationships and portfolio.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the assigned portfolio and industry, articulating and supporting a credit perspective based on well-founded analysis that effectively balances risk and business objectives.
  • Ensure proper regulatory classification and minimize net credit losses for the covered portfolio, identifying emerging concerns that require escalation.
  • Accountable for decision-making using credit approval authority in conjunction with Independent Risk.
  • Oversee the analysis and workflow of underwriting requests for new and existing credit relationships, including pre-screening opportunities, facilitating amendments and extensions, performing annual reviews, and other credit requests.
  • Lead the timely analysis and preparation of financial reviews of existing borrowers to track compliance with loan covenants, raising potential concerns and taking necessary actions in collaboration with other key stakeholders.
  • Direct and supervise the loan documentation process for new transactions and amendments, ensuring all credit approval terms are accurately represented in closing documents.
  • Conduct periodic client calls on all portfolio clients and select new opportunities in partnership with the Relationship Manager.
  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of various credit products and services offered to CCB clients.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff to become effective resources and future Credit Officers and Bankers.
  • Recommend improvements to existing processes to enhance efficiency and controls.
  • Work proactively and constructively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure transactions progress in accordance with appropriate controls.
Qualifications
  • Experienced credit underwriting executive with deep expertise in the Services industry, particularly in commercial and cross-border lending.
  • 5+ years of experience in credit underwriting, portfolio, and/or risk management within a large multinational financial services organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intermediate accounting theory and its practical application in the credit underwriting process.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, presentation, and listening) and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong credit acumen and ability to articulate a perspective, working across various credit products, with experience in early problem recognition and resolution.
  • Demonstrates learning agility: Seeks resources and experiences to continually build knowledge/skills; quickly applies learning to new situations.
  • Reaches decisions in a timely and transparent manner, knowing when sufficient information has been gathered to make sound decisions, taking calculated risks with confidence in defending their credit view.
  • Proficient in various spreadsheet and word processing applications.
  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degrees and other certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
