Job Description

Suffolk Iron Works is seeking a skilled Burn Table Operator to join our team in a full-time position. As a key member of our fabrication department, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining our burning machines to produce high-quality steel products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain Specifications: Observe and cut materials to precise dimensions, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, and troubleshooting processes to ensure quality assurance.
  • Operate Burning Machines: Safely and efficiently operate one or more burning machines to burn plates in various shapes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Select and Setup Tooling: Choose and configure tooling to meet specific job requirements.
  • Bend/Form Parts: Shape and inspect parts to blueprints, ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Operate CNC and Non-CNC Machines: Safely operate computer-driven and non-computerized burning machines, selecting correct burning tips and gases to complete jobs effectively.
  • Read and Understand Work Orders: Accurately read and complete work orders, ensuring all necessary information is recorded.
  • Use Safety Equipment: Effectively use all necessary tools and equipment, including plasma or flame-cutting torches, overhead and wall cranes, and hand torches.
  • Maintain Equipment: Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot malfunctions, and call for repairs to ensure equipment is in good working condition.
  • Document Actions: Complete production and quality logs to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Read Work Instructions: Determine material requirements and locate materials in the warehouse.
  • Enter Program Settings: Enter correct program settings into computer for machine burning specifications.
  • Set Up and Operate Machines: Set up, operate, or tend burn machines to cut material to specified dimensions.
  • Inspect and Measure Work Pieces: Inspect and measure work pieces to specifications, ensuring quality and accuracy.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Burning Machines: Understand specific speeds, fuel settings, tips, and plasma consumables required to cut various thicknesses of steel.
  • Experience with Plate Burning Machines: Previous experience operating plate burning machines (plasma or oxy-fuel) in a steel service center or fabrication environment.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with customers, internal sales representatives, coworkers, and vendors.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read blueprints or drawings.
  • Reliability: Must be a steady, reliable worker.
  • Mathematical and Reading Skills: Basic levels of mathematical, reading, writing, and communication skills necessary to successfully accomplish the job description, skills, and ability requirements.
  • Visual and Auditory Acuity: Requires visual acuity necessary and appropriate to perform all job duties and requirements, as well as auditory acuity capable of hearing safety alarms and warning signals.
