Role: LRC Tutor II - American Sign Language

Job Summary: The role involves providing individualized instruction in American Sign Language (ASL) within the Language Resource Center. Responsibilities include assisting students from various disciplines with effective learning strategies and interventions. Duties encompass tailoring instruction to meet student needs, identifying learning obstacles, and developing personalized learning plans. Additionally, the tutor may guide students to appropriate campus resources and address online inquiries related to class support, including troubleshooting software issues.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Linguistics of ASL, or a related field with a minimum of 18 credit hours in ASL/Deaf Studies.
  • Strong communication skills in both English and ASL, demonstrating patience and empathy.
  • Previous tutoring experience is required.
  • Proficiency in ASL at a native-like level.
  • Capability to convey ASL concepts effectively in one-on-one or small group settings, whether in-person or online.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Proficient in managing appointments and documenting data using relevant software.
  • Skill in creating engaging learning experiences, driven by student inquiries and feedback.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the "Signing Naturally" curriculum.
  • Availability during daytime hours on weekdays.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement diverse tutoring strategies to support students at the institution, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of course materials and varying learning needs.
  • Exhibit strong work ethics by being dependable and committed.
  • Assist in promoting LRC tutoring services.
  • Engage in training sessions and collaborative meetings.
  • Support daily operations of the center, including material checkouts, adherence to center policies, and respect for diversity among students and staff.
  • Contribute to the training and mentorship of new tutors, sharing best practices and available resources.
