Position Overview

Job Title: Bird Keeper

Department: Animal Husbandry

Reports To: Section Curator

Location: Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium

Compensation: Starting at $16.00, commensurate with experience

General Summary:

This role is suitable for individuals ranging from entry-level to those with advanced experience in the routine care of avian species and their environments. The Bird Keeper is responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of the animals, maintaining habitats, and keeping accurate records. This position requires a commitment to teamwork, continuous learning, and adherence to the values of the Audubon Nature Institute.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver exceptional guest experiences through friendly and service-oriented interactions.
  • Uphold the highest standards in daily operations within the Husbandry Department.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Respond promptly to communication from colleagues and guests.
  • Proactively identify and resolve workplace issues.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and report significant repair needs.
  • Foster positive relationships with the public and fellow staff members.
  • Make decisions aligned with Audubon Nature Institute policies.
  • Assist with daily tasks across various sections as needed.
  • Perform maintenance duties including cleaning, painting, and general repairs.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to grooming standards.
  • Comply with safety regulations to ensure efficient operations.

Guest Engagement:

  • Engage with guests to enhance their experience and share knowledge.
  • Conduct educational tours and presentations for special groups.
  • Develop and implement educational programs as necessary.
  • Act as a representative of the Audubon Nature Institute.
  • Prepare written materials for publication on various platforms.

Financial Responsibility:

  • Handle basic financial transactions and maintain budgetary discipline.
  • Manage time effectively to minimize overtime.

Research and Conservation:

  • Support and participate in Audubon’s conservation initiatives.
  • Oversee departmental research projects as needed.

Qualifications:

Experience: Minimum of one year in a zoological or similar facility focusing on avian species.

Education: High School diploma required; a degree in zoology, biology, or related field preferred.

Certifications: Valid driver's license required; SCUBA and First Aid/CPR certifications are advantageous.

Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with zoological management systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform strenuous tasks, lift heavy objects, and swim.

Work Environment: Willingness to work outdoors and manage exposure to various environmental conditions.
