General Summary:
This role is designed for individuals ranging from entry-level to experienced keepers, involving semi-skilled to advanced tasks in the routine care of designated avian species and their environments. The Bird Keeper is accountable for all facets of animal health, welfare, habitat upkeep, and meticulous recordkeeping. A commitment to team values, continuous learning, and the culture of the Audubon Nature Institute is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver an exceptional guest experience by engaging positively with visitors and staff.
- Uphold the highest standards in daily operations within the Husbandry Department.
- Be available for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as required.
- Respond promptly to phone messages and emails.
- Proactively address workplace challenges, including identifying and resolving issues as they arise.
- Recognize and address minor maintenance concerns promptly while reporting significant needs.
- Foster positive interactions with the public and colleagues.
- Make decisions aligned with Audubon Nature Institute policies.
- Assist with daily responsibilities across various sections as needed.
- Perform facility and exhibit maintenance tasks, including waste removal, cleaning, painting, and repairs.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers, management, vendors, and guests.
- Adhere to high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including uniform compliance.
- Consistently follow Audubon Nature Institute standards to promote safe and efficient operations.
Enhancing Guest Experience:
- Work within the mission and guidelines of the Audubon Nature Institute.
- Communicate information and ideas clearly and effectively.
- Conduct behind-the-scenes tours for special guests and educational programs as scheduled.
- Engage with the public through educational presentations and media interactions.
- Develop and deliver educational programs as required.
- Act as an interpreter and spokesperson for the Audubon Nature Institute.
- Prepare animal and exhibit information for publication on various platforms.
Financial Responsibility:
- Perform basic arithmetic and manage financial transactions.
- Work within budget constraints and manage time to minimize overtime.
Wildlife Conservation:
- Support and promote Audubon programs.
- Participate in and oversee departmental research and conservation initiatives.
Qualifications:
Experience:
- At least one year of experience in a zoological facility, public aquarium, wildlife center, aviary, or similar establishment focusing on avian species.
- Knowledge of modern aviculture and care for other taxa is advantageous.
- Familiarity with breeding, incubation, and hand-rearing practices is a plus.
- Understanding of operant conditioning techniques is beneficial.
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required; a degree in zoology, biology, animal science, or a related field is preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- Valid driver's license is required.
- SCUBA certification and First Aid/CPR certification are advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform strenuous work both indoors and outdoors.
- Capable of lifting up to 100 pounds and frequently lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to swim.
Working Conditions:
- Regular attendance is essential, with scheduling flexibility required.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours as needed.
- Ability to work outdoors and manage exposure to various environmental conditions.
