Position Title: Animal Ambassador Care Specialist

Reports To: Assistant Curator of Ambassador Animals

Location: Audubon Zoo

General Summary:

As a vital part of the Learning & Engagement (L&E) team, the Animal Ambassador Care Specialist is tasked with the daily management and welfare of the Ambassador Animal collection at Audubon Zoo. This role encompasses essential responsibilities such as daily animal care, health monitoring, training, enrichment activities, and maintaining the cleanliness of animal habitats. The Ambassador collection features a diverse range of species, including reptiles, invertebrates, mammals, and birds.

The Specialist will also engage with guests through daily programming and collaborate with the Zoo Engagement team to enhance the visitor experience. Under the supervision of the Assistant Curator of Ambassador Animals, this position involves participating in behavioral management practices to ensure the highest welfare standards for the animals while delivering innovative and engaging programming.

Key Responsibilities:

To fulfill the mission of Audubon, the Animal Ambassador Care Specialist will:

  • Deliver Exceptional Guest Experiences: Provide outstanding care and welfare for a group of ambassador animals, creating unique engagement opportunities for visitors.
  • Ensure Animal Health: Monitor the health and wellbeing of all ambassador animals through daily observations and effective communication with veterinary staff.
  • Maintain Records: Keep accurate daily records and communications for the collection, adhering to best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Implement Enrichment Programs: Develop and maintain a comprehensive enrichment and behavioral management program, including operant conditioning training.
  • Collaborate Effectively: Work closely with the L&E Team and Animal Care Department to ensure a consistent and high-quality guest experience.
  • Engage with Guests: Proactively communicate with visitors, anticipating their needs and enhancing their experience.

Educational Outreach:

Educate a diverse audience about wildlife through:

  • Delivering informal programming and events throughout the year.
  • Collaborating on the design and implementation of educational programs related to conservation messages.
  • Seeking innovative methods for animal care and education.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 1-3 years in animal care, preferably with ambassador animals.
  • Experience in handling various animal species and operant conditioning training is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

Education:

  • A four-year degree in a relevant field is preferred, though substantial experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and lift items up to 50 pounds.
  • Must possess good visual and auditory perception to monitor animal behavior.

Working Conditions:

Must be prepared to work in various weather conditions and maintain a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

This position may involve supervising volunteers and interns as needed.
