Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Specialist III to join our team at the PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong background in facilities maintenance, operations, and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex building maintenance and construction work, including groundskeeping, building and facility construction, water and wastewater systems repairs, equipment and vehicle upkeep, and repairs and preventative maintenance of grounds, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist with the operation, upkeep, and maintenance of Galveston Island State Park, including purchasing of supplies, monthly paperwork, and other associated reports.
  • Follow state rules and regulations using a purchase card to obtain items needed for park operations.
  • Use computer to answer and correspond by email, fill out timesheets, and file needed park reports.
  • Assist with office work, including the registration of campers and the collection of money.
  • Assist with special events, natural and cultural resource management, promoting voluntary compliance of state park rules and regulations, and responding to emergency situations.
  • Oversee work of volunteers and community service workers.
  • Work under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • Three years facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.
  • Must possess a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one year of employment, a Non-Commercial Political Pesticide/Herbicide Applicators license issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Experience in customer service and/or public relations.
  • Experience in trail maintenance.
  • Experience in park operations.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Experience in facility maintenance and repair.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance and repair.
  • Experience as safety officer.
  • Experience in pesticide/herbicide application.
  • Experience as an equipment operator.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of building and facility repair techniques such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or mechanical components and operations.
  • Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems.
  • Knowledge of general custodial duties.
  • Knowledge of trail maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety programs.
  • Knowledge of natural resource management.
  • Knowledge of cultural resource management.
  • Knowledge of pesticide/herbicide application.
  • Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.
  • Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions.
  • Skill in performing trail maintenance.
  • Skill in equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in chainsaw operation.
  • Skills in creating, administering, and maintaining a safety program.
  • Skill in maintaining natural resources.
Working Conditions
  • Required to work in a public park with overnight camping.
  • Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
  • Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations.
  • Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 80 lbs.
  • Required to use appropriate safety procedures and equipment.
  • Required to operate a State vehicle.
  • Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.
  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.
  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
