Responsibilities:


The Department Head is responsible for fostering a patient-centered healthcare environment that employs a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to deliver top-tier care. This role includes 24-hour accountability for departmental operations, ensuring optimal resource utilization for effective performance. The Department Head is tasked with maintaining appropriate staffing levels and skill mixes to support departmental functions, along with managing personnel functions such as recruitment, hiring, disciplinary actions, evaluations, counseling, and education, while adhering to all relevant policies.

Additionally, the Department Head documents all personnel actions accurately, supports staff as valuable assets, and demonstrates strong interpersonal skills by coaching and mentoring team members. Responsibilities also include developing an annual budget aligned with departmental needs within available resources, coordinating with other department heads for efficient resource utilization, and monitoring budgetary expenses and revenues to identify variances and adjust spending as necessary.

The Department Head evaluates and recommends space allocation and design to meet departmental needs, develops, implements, and updates policies and procedures collaboratively, in accordance with TJC and hospital standards. This role involves preparing and reviewing bids, managing the distribution and use of supplies, materials, and equipment, and supporting the mission of USA Health by integrating institutional mission, vision, and values into staff engagement.

As a professional role model, the Department Head utilizes appropriate software to generate reports and correspondence, ensuring compliance with all requirements and policies while performing responsibilities ethically. The role also includes facilitating staff participation in educational offerings for skill enhancement and ongoing development, ensuring personnel competency in essential functions, and conducting timely staff evaluations according to policy.

Furthermore, the Department Head develops action plans for employees with unsatisfactory evaluations and participates in strategic planning activities for both the department and institution. This includes creating a strategic plan that aligns with the institution's overall objectives, communicating this plan to staff, and adapting it in response to changing internal and external factors.

Accountability for maintaining standards established by professional, regulatory, and governmental agencies is essential, along with promoting departmental compliance with relevant standards. The Department Head ensures adherence to current Infection Control and Safety Standards, fosters collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments to ensure effective service delivery, and encourages participation in planning and program development to support quality patient care.

Effective communication skills are crucial for engaging with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team, both in person and via telephone. The Department Head is responsible for developing and maintaining a performance improvement program for the department, making regular patient rounds with Department Supervisors and Staff, monitoring patient progress, and serving as a source of information for the healthcare team.

Regular and prompt attendance is expected, along with the ability to work defined schedules and overtime as required, and performing related duties as necessary.


Qualifications:


A Bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy is required, along with five years of progressively responsible experience as a Respiratory Therapist, three of which must be in a supervisory or managerial role. Current licensure with the Alabama Board of Respiratory Therapists and registry with the National Board of Respiratory Care is also necessary.
