About the Role

The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Deputy Commissioner of Classification and Population Management. This critical role will lead a team responsible for the placement of the Department of Correction's population across its various facilities, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the classification team in the placement of DOC's population across facilities, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and governing statutes.
  • Facilitate the population's successful community integration, ensuring housing, programming, and job assignments meet departmental standards.
  • Recommend improvements in classification procedures, provide technical assistance, and resolve complex classification decisions.
  • Train staff in classification procedures, operations, and methodologies, and update the classification manual.
  • Establish standards and procedures for data collection, oversee data transfers, and integrate classification operations with other Department programs.
  • Audit classification committee hearings and reviews, approve transfers between facilities, and liaison with other agencies and stakeholders.
Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a Master's degree in a relevant field, such as Public Administration, Personnel Administration, or Business Administration, and at least five years of experience in a related field, including 18 months in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

Preferred candidates will have extensive experience in correctional classification methodologies, best practices in security management, and a proven ability to manage competing priorities and execute during emergencies.
