General Counsel for Correctional Services

The City of New York is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Counsel to join our team as an Executive Agency Counsel for Policy and Compliance. This is a critical role that requires a strong understanding of legal and policy issues impacting the Department of Correction.
Key Responsibilities- Provide legal and policy advice to the Deputy Commissioner, Legal Matters, and other senior personnel on a wide range of issues affecting the Department.
- Assist in the management and supervision of the Legal Division, including attorneys and administrative support personnel.
- Represent the Department in various types of legal proceedings, including contract negotiations and regulatory matters.
- Participate in formulating agency-wide policy and procedures, including those related to procurement and business affairs.
- Work closely with the Mayor's Office of Contract Services (MOCS), NYC Law Department, and other agencies to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
- Research and analyze complex legal issues, including those related to criminal law and foreign jurisdictions.
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- Four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, including 18 months of supervision of other attorneys in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity.
- Ability to manage a team of employees in a legal setting.
- Excellent writing, communication, analytical, research, problem-solving, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain and handle confidential documents and information.
- Ability to interact with other city agencies and work strategically and collaboratively with inter-departmental units.
- Demonstrated ability to work under intense pressure and meet restrictive deadlines.
- Ability to communicate highly complex information clearly and succinctly, both orally and in writing.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
