Job Summary

This is a skilled position in the operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment on an assigned shift. The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, routine servicing, and care of a variety of plant equipment, including reading meters and gauges, recording measurements, operating pumps, and maintaining chemical mixes.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes and be able to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized software applications. They will also be able to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions, as well as use audio and visual means to monitor equipment for efficient operation.

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and experience in the operation and minor maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment. The successful candidate will also be required to possess and maintain a Class 'O' driver's license and a Wastewater Treatment Plant Certificate, Class II, in accordance with Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Certification Act.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant equipment using pre-determined procedures
  • Read meters and gauges to measure flow, functions, temperatures, pressures, and chemical levels, and record measurements on shift logs and charts
  • Collect samples for laboratory testing and analysis following pre-determined procedures
  • Adjust chemical and water mix, sludge filtrations systems, and pumps as necessary
  • Operate sewage and sludge pumps, skims primary tanks, transfers grease to holding tanks, washes tanks, and draws sludge
  • Perform routine cleaning and servicing of equipment to include lubricating equipment, checking bearings and pumps, closing gate valves, removing rags and grit from pumps, refilling and replacing chemical containers, and draining condensation
  • Perform air readings with gas detectors to determine if equipment is functioning properly and to identify potentially hazardous conditions
  • Maintain regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in the operation and minor maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Class 'O' driver's license
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant Certificate, Class II, in accordance with Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Certification Act

Working Conditions:

This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to loud noises, strong odors, and hazardous materials. The successful candidate will be required to wear personal protective equipment and follow safety protocols at all times.
