Position Overview:

The Director of Sponsored Projects and Contracts is tasked with overseeing the pre-award operations, which includes leading a dynamic team of research administrators dedicated to facilitating effective communication of institutional policies. This role ensures the fair application of sponsor regulations, enhances the proposal submission workflow, and develops efficient processes to support the research ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance and training on relevant policies and procedures; manage workload distribution; approve leave requests; set goals, mentor staff, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Proposal Management: Identify funding opportunities; offer expertise in proposal and award development; ensure proposals and contracts comply with guidelines; oversee the transition to contracting and post-award administration.
  • Non-Financial Post-Award Oversight: Manage activities related to non-financial award actions, including award setup, contract negotiations, budget modifications, progress reporting, and closeout processes.
  • Communication and Networking: Represent the institution at various meetings; cultivate relationships with funding agencies; assist in the preparation of reports and communications regarding research initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Contribute to the enhancement of internal systems; educate the research community on policies; assist in the implementation of new initiatives; provide policy recommendations to leadership.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree is required, with a Master's degree preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of five years of relevant experience in research administration, including project budgeting and cost management. At least three years of supervisory experience is necessary, with a preference for those who have managed large, complex grant-funded projects in an academic environment.

Skills and Competencies:

The ideal candidate will be collaborative, adaptable, and open to feedback. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students. Excellent written communication skills and a customer service mindset are critical.

Candidates should possess strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, along with effective organizational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities. A solid understanding of federal regulations governing sponsored research, particularly 2 CFR Part 200 Uniform Guidance, is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with research administration systems are preferred.
