Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ophthalmic Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of an ophthalmic medical practice, working under the direct supervision of a physician. This position involves assisting with patient care, as well as performing various administrative and clinical tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Introduce oneself and the department or physician to patients and visitors, ensuring identification is visible at all times.
  • Welcome patients courteously, addressing inquiries and directing requests efficiently.
  • Prepare examination and treatment areas for patient assessments.
  • Provide patients and their families with clear explanations of procedures prior to execution.
  • Assist in conducting patient eye examinations and various office procedures, including in-office surgical interventions and treatments as directed by the physician.
  • Utilize ophthalmic instruments to perform diagnostic tests as instructed by the physician.
  • Administer prescribed topical medications or diagnostic agents as necessary for testing or treatment.
  • Educate patients about medications, tests, or procedures, ensuring compliance with physician recommendations.
  • Coordinate surgical scheduling for patients, providing comprehensive preoperative and postoperative instructions, including appointment details. Address any patient inquiries regarding surgical procedures and aftercare, documenting relevant information in patient records.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports for tracking tests to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with the front desk to manage schedule adjustments.
  • Be adaptable to work in the technical department of Ophthalmology and may assist as a Patient Services Representative.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant is not mandatory for this role. Previous experience is beneficial, but on-the-job training may suffice.
  • Must possess and maintain Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) certification.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor while respecting patient privacy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strength: Sedentary (able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally).
  • Standing/Walking: Occasionally required (up to 1/3 of the time).
  • Keyboarding/Dexterity: Frequently required (from 3/4 of the time).
  • Ability to focus on a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Capable of performing repetitive hand and finger motions.
  • Must be mobile and able to work in various positions (standing, sitting, bending, and walking) for extended durations.
  • Effective verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Visual and auditory capabilities are necessary.
