Position Description SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION/UNIT
Transformative Coaching and Leadership M.Ed.

Program (TCL):
The Transformative Coaching and Leadership program is an M.Ed. degree program in the Department of Education at UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies.

The goals and principles of the program include:
1. Cultivating one's own philosophy of teaching, (sports) coaching and leadership and applying it in practice.
2. Appreciating a holistic understanding of persons as physical, intellectual, emotional, social, & spiritual beings.
3. Embracing a transformational model of (sports) coaching and leadership (rather than merely transactional).
4. Commitment to a social justice ethic including commitment to equity, inclusion & diversity.
5. Appreciating the intersection of theory and practice and aspiring towards theory and evidence informing one's practice.
Students in the program take 9 quarter courses, including a research methods course, and complete a research-based capstone project (approx. 30 pages) where students identify a problem of practice and suggest interventions to solve the problem.

SUMMARY OF POSITION
Teaching the "Introduction to Research Methods" course in the Transformative Coaching and Leadership M

Ed program:
fall 2024, winter 2025, and spring 2025. Anticipated service start date is 9/23/2024.

Course Description:

The research methods course is an introduction to different approaches and methods of gathering evidence in the social sciences, including qualitative approaches (e.g., semi-structured interviews, focus groups, case studies, etc.), quantitative approaches (e.g.

descriptive, survey, correlational, experimental, etc.) and mixed method approaches along with software for processing and analyzing data.

The course also includes an introduction to program evaluation and concludes with a discussion of ethics in social scientific research.

The course is in-person, meets once a week for 3.5 hours in the evening (5pm-8:30pm) for 11 weeks each quarter and will have a TA.

Class size will be approximately 20-30 students.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare and teach weekly, interactive and engaging sessions on research methods (as outlined above in course description) through lectures, discussions, group work and other sound pedagogies.

Ensure understanding on the part of students of key concepts in quantitative and qualitative methods and program evaluation.
Assist students to read and comprehend research-based articles.
Introduce students to the capstone project, its guidelines and requirements.
Demonstrate to students how class content on research methods applies to their capstone research.

Assist students to apply their learnings in research methods to their capstone research including formulating research questions, constructing a research design, using quantitative and qualitative methods to gather empirical data, collating, analyzing and presenting data.

Monitor students' progress on the capstone and provide feedback and guidance ensuring successful completion of the capstone.

Qualifications Basic Qualifications

Master's degree in social sciences.
Prior coursework in and sound understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Teaching experience in the area of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Familiarity with statistical software packages.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree in the social sciences where the dissertation includes collection of empirical data.
Background, or research experience or interest in sports coaching and/or leadership studies [highly desirable].

Good understanding of higher education pedagogies and ability to design engaging and stimulating learning sessions on fundamentals of research methods.

Experience and interest working with or teaching athletes.
Familiarity with qualitative data software packages.
Background in program evaluation.
