Role Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a vital member of the Lancaster General healthcare team, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist is tasked with delivering Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and nutrition education to patients across various age groups and community members. This position serves as a key resource for nutrition-related information to allied health professionals and plays a crucial role in integrating nutritional care into comprehensive treatment plans.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Qualified candidates will possess the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following essential duties:
  • Collects and evaluates data from medical histories, medication records, laboratory results, nutritional assessments, and patient interviews to conduct thorough evaluations of the nutritional needs of patients in assigned inpatient units. Utilizes contemporary computer technology relevant to clinical applications and departmental operations.
  • Identifies patients at nutritional risk, classifies malnutrition levels according to ASPEN/AND criteria when applicable, initiates appropriate nutrition interventions, and establishes follow-up timelines in accordance with established protocols.
  • Formulates and executes individualized nutritional care plans: Communicates these plans to the healthcare team through both verbal and written documentation. Assesses the effectiveness of nutrition interventions and modifies care plans to achieve targeted goals and outcomes. Maintains precise electronic records of care plans, utilizing them as effective communication tools with fellow nutrition staff.
  • Analyzes physiological and metabolic responses to Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PEN).
  • Customizes nutrition support regimens based on individual clinical data and outcomes.
  • Considers social, economic, and demographic factors in discharge planning for patients receiving PEN.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with Medicare guidelines concerning PEN.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development through required continuing education to enhance skills and competencies.
  • Provides Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PEN) support: Calculates nutrient needs and recommends PEN formulations to physicians, participates in multidisciplinary team rounds as necessary to optimize nutrition outcomes, educates patients and families on nutritional principles, therapeutic diets, food selection, and food economics; adapts nutrition plans to fit individual lifestyles. Conducts group nutrition classes and interprets, evaluates, and applies current research and evidence-based practices in nutritional care. Utilizes these resources to create and update educational materials.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The following tasks are considered secondary to the primary responsibilities outlined above:
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings. Conducts in-services and educational sessions for peers and allied health professionals.
  • Advises patients on food/drug interactions when necessary.
  • Acts as a liaison to the Food Service Department to enhance patient satisfaction and assists with meal planning as required.
  • Provides clinical oversight to dietetic technicians. Collaborates in the design and implementation of performance improvement initiatives with physicians, nurses, and other departments.
  • Collects and assesses data from medical histories, medication records, laboratory results, nutritional assessments, and/or physical evaluations to conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' nutritional needs.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities as required for this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Registered Dietitian from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or eligibility for registration with certification to be obtained within three months of hire.
  • Licensure as a dietitian-nutritionist in the state of Pennsylvania within three months of hire.
  • One to two years of clinical nutrition experience and education.
  • One year of educational experience in teaching/learning with strong interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two to three years of clinical nutrition experience and educational skills.
  • One year of experience in Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition support.
  • NICU Only: One year of experience with neonatal intensive care unit populations.
