Position Overview:

This role encompasses a 0.9 FTE/36 hours per week commitment, with responsibilities including on-call holiday rotations and one weekend shift every three months.

Role Summary:
As a vital member of the healthcare team at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, the Clinical Dietitian is tasked with delivering Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and nutrition education to a diverse patient population and the broader community.

The Registered Dietitian (RD) serves as a crucial resource for nutrition-related information, collaborating with various allied health professionals to ensure that patients' nutritional care is seamlessly integrated into their overall treatment plans.


Key Responsibilities:

Qualified candidates should possess the capability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to execute the following duties:

  1. Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' nutritional needs by gathering and analyzing data from medical histories, medication records, lab results, and nutritional and social histories, including patient interviews and physical assessments as appropriate.
  2. Utilize current technology effectively in clinical applications and departmental functions.
  3. Identify patients at nutritional risk, categorize malnutrition levels based on established criteria, and initiate appropriate nutrition interventions, establishing follow-up care timelines according to recognized standards.

Nutritional Care Plan Development:
Formulate and implement tailored nutritional care plans, ensuring clear communication with the healthcare team through both verbal and written documentation. Evaluate the outcomes of nutrition interventions and adjust care plans as necessary to meet established goals.

Maintain accurate electronic records of care plans, leveraging electronic tools for effective communication with fellow nutrition staff.

Analyze physiological and metabolic responses to Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PEN), customizing nutrition support regimens based on clinical data and patient outcomes. Consider social, economic, and demographic factors in discharge planning for patients receiving PEN.

Demonstrate knowledge of Medicare guidelines related to PEN and pursue ongoing education to enhance professional growth and competency.


Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Support:

Calculate nutrient requirements and recommend PEN formulations to physicians. Participate in multidisciplinary team rounds as necessary to promote optimal nutrition outcomes based on patient unit assignments. Educate patients and families on nutritional principles, therapeutic dietary plans, food selection, and food economics, adapting nutrition plans to fit individual lifestyles.

Conduct group nutrition classes and interpret, evaluate, and apply current research and evidence-based information relevant to nutritional care. Utilize these resources to develop and update educational materials.


Additional Responsibilities:

The following tasks are considered secondary to the primary responsibilities:

  1. Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and conduct in-services for peers and allied health professionals.
  2. Counsel patients regarding food/drug interactions when appropriate.
  3. Act as a liaison to the Food Service Department to enhance patient satisfaction and assist with meal planning as needed.
  4. Provide clinical guidance to dietetic technicians.
  5. Engage in performance improvement initiatives alongside physicians, nurses, and ancillary departments.
  6. Participate in on-call responsibilities as required.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Required:
Bachelor's degree in nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution.
Certification as a Registered Dietitian from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or eligibility to obtain certification within three months of hire.
Licensure as a dietitian-nutritionist in Pennsylvania within three months of hire.
One to two years of clinical nutrition experience and education.
One year of educational experience in teaching/learning with strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two to three years of clinical nutrition experience and educational skills.
One year of experience in Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition support.
