Position Overview


This role is available at either the Quality Assurance Engineer 2 or 3 level, contingent upon the qualifications of the chosen candidate.

Quality Assurance Engineer (QE) 2 ($92,300 - $151,000)


As a member of the Plutonium Infrastructure Quality (PIQ) team, you will report to the Group Leader and the Quality Control (QC) Inspection Team Leader.

The mission of PIQ is to support the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Plutonium Infrastructure (ALDPI) by ensuring that quality standards are upheld and integrated into work projects through oversight and inspection activities, validating adherence to specifications during construction, maintenance, and modification tasks.

Your responsibilities will encompass both deployed and institutional inspection activities.


You must possess the capability to obtain Q clearance, engage in the Human Reliability Program (HRP), and be available for Night or Back Shift work schedules.


Key Responsibilities:

- Achieve and maintain certifications in accordance with LANL qualification and certification requirements.

- Conduct Level II QC inspections.

- Manage and review Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) and inspection/test reports prior to submission.

- Assist in the formulation and revision of inspection procedures, reports, and checklists.

- Collaborate with management and engineering teams in executing and reporting on inspection activities.


Quality Assurance Engineer (QE) 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined for the QE 2 level, at this level you will:

- Execute Level II QC inspections and proactively assess issues, offering initial corrective action recommendations.

- Develop and enhance inspection procedures, reports, and protocols.

- Undertake duties as a Nonconformance Report Coordinator (NCRC), which includes tracking, reporting, and ensuring timely resolution of open nonconformance reports.


The QE 3 role requires advanced expertise in welding and mechanical inspection, typically with around 8 years of experience in nuclear and/or DOE QE programs.

Experience in rebar fabrication, structural steel inspections, and anchor bolt installation is preferred. Safety and security are paramount responsibilities.

This position also involves monitoring operations for compliance with project plans and specifications to ensure quality control adherence, performing inspections per established plans, documenting inspection/test results, and implementing quality control policies and procedures.

Qualifications Required:

Quality Assurance Engineer 2:
- Familiarity with ASME NQA-1 quality standards.

- Understanding of quality-related regulations, policies, and procedures.

- Ability to learn national consensus standards of Quality Engineering (QE) / Quality Assurance (QA).

- Competence in interpreting various technical documents, blueprints, and schematics.

- Proven experience in research and problem-solving related to QC inspections.

- Capability to mentor junior QE personnel.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.


Quality Assurance Engineer 3:
- Extensive knowledge of quality regulations and policies.

- Advanced skills in interpreting technical documents and blueprints.

- Proven ability to conduct research and recommend solutions for QC issues.

- Familiarity with national consensus standards of QC.

- Experience in mentoring personnel.

- Strong communication and collaboration skills.


Education/Experience:

- QE 2: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE/QA, or a related field with 5 years of relevant experience.

- QE 3: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE, or a related field with 8 years of relevant experience.


Desired Qualifications:

- Certification as a Welding Inspector.

- Experience with nuclear and/or DOE QC programs.

- Proficiency in measurement techniques and testing methodologies.

- Active Q clearance or similar security clearance.


Work Environment:

- This position may require overtime or irregular schedules.

- Onsite work is required.
