Job Overview

Tufts Medical Center seeks a skilled Medical Interpreter to provide accurate interpretation services for patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). As a Medical Interpreter, you will interpret spoken language and culture between patients, physicians, and staff, ensuring accurate cross-language communication in a medical environment. You will also translate written documents and act as a culture broker to identify cultural differences that may lead to misunderstandings.

Responsibilities:

  1. Interpret spoken language from English into the target language and from the target language into English for patients, physicians, and staff.
  2. Combine language and cultural interpretation skills to provide effective communication.
  3. Participate in family meetings with social workers to assist with patient care.
  4. Contact non-English speaking patients to obtain consent signatures and explain medical information.
  5. Translate correspondence, brochures, and documents from English into the target language.
  6. Work collaboratively with peers and colleagues to achieve team goals and foster a positive work environment.

Requirements:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university.
  3. One year of relevant interpreting experience.
  4. Bilingual in American Sign Language (ASL).

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. National Certification for Medical Interpreters.
  2. Three years of relevant experience.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Prolonged standing and walking.
  2. Lifting and moving up to 100 pounds.
  3. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals and sick patients.

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Ability to read, write, and communicate in both languages.
  2. Advanced knowledge of interpreting techniques and medical terminology.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
