Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist II to join our team at Boston Medical Center. As a Medical Technologist II, you will be responsible for performing complex laboratory tests and interpreting results to ensure accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests and interpret results
  • Act as a resource and interpret tests for laboratory users
  • Review testing and procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Prioritize STAT and routine samples
  • Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling
  • Ensure appropriateness of sample for requested testing
  • Perform instrument and equipment maintenance
  • Recognize instrument, equipment or methodology problems and report to Assistant Supervisor or Manager
  • Perform QC procedures and assess Quality Control data
  • Recognize technical and non-technical problems/discrepancies in laboratory operations and report to Assistant Supervisor or Manager
  • Perform analytic testing and assess the validity of results
  • Maintain and provide clear, concise, accurate and legible records of test performance
  • Review patient results, recognize problems and/or discrepancies and investigate
  • Transcribe results/information with accuracy into LIS system
  • Notify appropriate person of all Critical Alert Values and required call back of results
  • Maintain proficiency for all designated LIS functions
  • Provide proper documentation of receipt, quality control performance and implementation of reagents/lots/materials
  • Ensure adequate Blood inventories are maintained
  • Assist other laboratory sections as needed
  • Participate in Quality Assurance /Quality Improvement activities
  • Maintain active participation in completing initial, semi-annual and annual competency documentation
  • Maintain self-documentation on continuing education form of departmental level requirement
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings or, if unable, accept responsibility for reading staff communications
  • Support education of Medical Technology students, Pathology residents, new staff existing staff and others
  • Participate in all Sectional or Departmental committees or task forces as requested by manager
  • Communicate via telephone and other methods according to professional courtesy standards and departmental policy
  • Work cooperatively with other laboratory staff members and take initiative to determine where assistance is needed and render assistance
  • Report within shift all incidents, safety hazards or accidents to appropriate personnel according to Departmental Safety Policy
  • Complete mandatory safety education sessions per BMC and Departmental policy
  • Abide by HIPPA policies and respect patient and employee confidentiality
  • Keep equipment and work area neat, orderly and well stocked
  • Plan and prioritize tasks and adjust to variable workloads
  • Maintain open communication with section leadership
  • Restock work station after each shift and assess the inventory as required by section
  • Notify management of supply needs
  • Adhere to Boston Medical Center's values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the institution's mission of exceptional care without exception
  • Follow established Hospital and Laboratory Infection Control and Safety procedures
  • Follow BMC and Departmental Dress Code policy
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as needed
Requirements
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science
  • Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or specialty certification is preferred
  • Experience required with Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry: must have two years of experience in a clinical laboratory
  • Experience required with a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science: must have one year experience in clinical laboratory
  • Requires the knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform highly complex tests as defined by CLIA
  • Requires the analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing as defined under CLIA 88
  • Requires the ability to maintain compliance with all regulatory agency requirements
  • Requires the manual/visual dexterity necessary to prepare specimens, prepare solutions, screen specimens and operate a computer software system
  • Requires interpersonal and English verbal and written language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians, interact with other technologists and so forth
  • Requires the ability to perform venipuncture techniques
