Position Overview

The Lead Automation Solutions Engineer plays a crucial role in providing automation expertise for production processes, ensuring compliance with relevant GMP and safety regulations.

This role encompasses the execution of change control processes, investigation of deviations, routine support for automation systems, and off-hours assistance as needed.

Additionally, the Lead Automation Solutions Engineer spearheads complex automation support initiatives, executes engineering projects tailored to business needs, applies foundational principles in solution delivery, and proposes innovative control strategies for various chemical manufacturing processes.

The responsibilities include engineering design and installation services for automated equipment, facility systems, and software applications. Troubleshooting and corrective maintenance for all production and facility equipment are also key components of this role. The primary focus is on sustaining automated electromechanical systems and software, which involves project support related to facility enhancements, equipment installations, and maintenance activities.

Typical project responsibilities include developing specifications for systems and equipment, coordinating implementation activities, and ensuring systems are operational.

Success in this position requires collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, suppliers, and third-party contractors. Candidates should be comfortable in a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical automation support for manufacturing operations utilizing DeltaV and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley control systems and associated OT process information systems.
  • Interpret and apply GMP documentation practices in a highly regulated setting.
  • Lead modernization initiatives to upgrade or replace outdated control systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers informally.
  • Conduct data analysis to identify enhancements in manufacturing processes.
  • Design and implement automation-related modifications to production operations.
  • Investigate automation-related deviations thoroughly.
  • Support system maintenance activities, including backups and performance monitoring.
  • Provide off-hours automation support as required.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards while maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Deliver engineering solutions that meet business needs.
  • Oversee project management and technical leadership for automation projects.
  • Supervise specialists and contractors involved in automation solution delivery.
  • Ensure lifecycle plans for automation systems are developed and executed.
  • Research and recommend new control strategies and technologies.
  • Maintain familiarity with pharmaceutical manufacturing practices.
  • Engage with all departments to enhance automated data collection and reporting methods, improving equipment and system reliability.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent technical experience with a minimum of 5 years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.

Experience with validation documentation maintenance.

Proficiency in process control and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC/HMI/SCADA programming and hardware.

Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams within engineering and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners.

Experience with greenfield or large-scale control system modernization projects.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to provide timely information and documentation that meets GMP standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical background in the Pharmaceutical or similar GMP-regulated industry.
  • Experience with plant-wide Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC and Emerson DeltaV implementations.
  • Familiarity with Intellution iFIX SCADA systems.
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs and HMIs.
  • Knowledge of industrial networks and communication protocols.
  • Understanding of network infrastructure and the segregation of IT and OT networks.
  • Experience with server administration and virtualization platforms.
