Lead Computational Scientist - AI/ML Researcher


The mission of ClearCompany is to enhance the understanding of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health.

The objective of the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is to provide cutting-edge engineering infrastructure while addressing high-risk, high-reward inquiries in biology through artificial intelligence.

We are in search of an independent and driven researcher within the Office of the CTO to construct extensive AI/ML models for biological applications.

Your responsibilities will include developing and implementing state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques for the representation, analysis, and interpretation of multimodal data to gain insights into biological systems in both health and disease.

This position will involve working with a variety of biological data types, including multi-omics data, microscopy data, in vivo and behavioral imaging data, electrophysiological data, and clinical data.

The role also requires collaboration across all divisions of ClearCompany, including Brain Science, Cell Science, Immunology, Neural Dynamics, and the Synthetic Biology Hub.

Potential AI/ML focus areas may encompass multimodal foundation models, diffusion models, causal representation learning, and more.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement ML models that enhance our understanding of intricate biological systems in health and disease.
  • Promote open science by publishing research papers and open-source code.
  • Collaborate with teams of scientists, computational biologists, and software engineers within ClearCompany and with external partners.
  • Advance community standards for scalability in developing, disseminating, and evaluating AI/ML/computational methods for scientific inquiries.
  • Lead the establishment of state-of-the-art engineering infrastructure at ClearCompany to support AI/ML research and applications.
  • Stay informed about the latest advancements in AI/ML and their potential applications in biological research, ensuring ClearCompany remains at the forefront of this domain.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that values diversity and encourages participation from team members with varied voices, experiences, and backgrounds.
  • Mentor and guide junior researchers, interns, or students engaged in AI/ML projects related to biological research.
  • Participate in company-wide initiatives, workshops, and seminars to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Required Education and Experience:
PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
11 years of relevant experience.
Proven ability to design, implement, and apply AI/ML models for analyzing large-scale biological data.

Preferred Education and Experience:
15+ years of experience in developing and applying ML methods.
Strong publication record of innovative scientific achievements (both individual and collaborative).
Expertise in Python-based ML libraries and frameworks such as PyTorch, Jax, Pyro, NumPy, and Pandas.
Solid understanding of statistical analysis, data preprocessing, feature selection, and model evaluation techniques.
Experience in building data pipelines to prepare biological data for ML, including model training and evaluation.
Knowledge of data preprocessing, normalization, and integration techniques specific to biological and clinical datasets.
Experience with distributed computing for ML models (e.g., distributing load across multiple nodes, Ray, HPC, Distributed PyTorch, etc.).
Experience in data visualization and presenting complex biological findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative computational approaches to address complex biological questions.
Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Physical Demands
Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; repetitive motion with lab equipment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment.
Travel
Attendance and participation in national and international conferences are expected.

Annualized Salary Range
$174,000 – $232,000
  • Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
