Position Overview

This role involves supporting the Government Relations and/or Legal departments with research and various tasks that aid in the formulation and execution of Memorial Hermann Health System's (MHHS) strategies concerning federal and state government relations. The intern will keep track of legislative activities at both federal and state levels and provide weekly written updates to the Associate Vice President of Government Relations. This position typically reports to the Associate Vice President of Government Relations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required. The candidate must also be actively pursuing a Master's degree in Government/Political Science, Public Affairs, Public Health, Public Administration/Public Policy, or a related discipline, or be a current Law student with a focus on healthcare law.

Licenses/Certifications: None required.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • General understanding of federal and state legislative and regulatory processes is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and presentation skills are necessary, with a proven ability to effectively engage in public policy advocacy.
  • Capability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic legislative and regulatory landscape is required.
  • Exceptional research and analytical skills are necessary, with the ability to interpret legislation and public policy.

Principal Duties

  • Monitor federal and state legislative activities and deliver weekly written reports to the Associate Vice President of Government Relations.
  • Assess the impact and risks to MHHS concerning federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Engage in trade association meetings, calls, hearings, and weekly internal discussions.
  • Oversee multiple projects related to legislative and policy activities as required.
  • Conduct research and analysis, providing reports on existing and proposed legislative and public policy initiatives.
  • Prepare issue briefs, bill summaries, testimony letters, presentations, and other relevant communications aimed at promoting favorable public policy.
  • Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary constraints, including time management, supply management, productivity, and service quality.
  • Encourage personal professional growth and development by fulfilling requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; support department-based objectives that contribute to the organization's success; serve as a mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
