Job Overview

Hamilton-Madison House is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for its community, particularly in the Two Bridges/Chinatown area of Manhattan's Lower East Side. The organization offers a diverse array of programs and services aimed at improving the well-being of residents across New York City's five boroughs, including childcare, youth development, senior services, behavioral health, and immigrant and community support.

We are in search of a meticulous and experienced Accountant to become a vital member of the Hamilton-Madison House team. The Accountant will be instrumental in upholding the financial integrity of the organization by accurately recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering financial transactions. This position requires strong analytical skills and a detail-oriented approach to compile and analyze account information, prepare financial statements, and address discrepancies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to procedures in line with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as federal and state regulations.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports, manage food inventory, and oversee budget modifications and program audits.
  • Analyze and project expenses for program directors.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops relevant to the programs.
  • Develop budget schedules for government-contracted programs.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of financial reports.
  • Support the annual agency audit process.
  • Conduct analysis of balance sheet accounts.
  • Provide assistance with bank reconciliations.
  • Resolve financial discrepancies and irregularities as they arise.
  • Complete cross-training and undertake special assignments as directed by the CFO.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience with a solid understanding of accounting principles.
  • Familiarity with governmental regulations, contracts, and budgeting processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Exceptional financial analysis capabilities.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fostering collaborative relationships with colleagues.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with FUND EZ accounting software is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices is preferred.
  • Understanding of regulations applicable to the nonprofit sector is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the City of New York's Health and Human Services Cost Policies and Procedures Manual is beneficial.

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package.

Work Schedule: Standard office hours, Monday to Friday.
