Role Overview:
The Registered Dietitian (RD) II is an intermediate level position that signifies an advanced practice stage. The RD II is in the process of obtaining a specialty certification or enhancing advanced competencies and knowledge in a specific area.

The RD II collaborates with healthcare team members to deliver medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to adult patients, utilizing current scientific literature and best practices.

Employing the Nutrition Care Process, the RD II conducts nutrition assessments, identifies nutrition-related issues, formulates and executes suitable interventions, and monitors and evaluates the results of these interventions.

The RD II provides nutrition education to patients, caregivers, and family members. He/She engages in or leads performance improvement initiatives and research projects. The RD II serves as a mentor to dietetic interns, students, and entry-level RDs.
Key Responsibilities:

1. Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments using accurate and relevant data to identify nutrition-related issues, including anthropometrics, biochemical data, medical tests, nutrition-focused physical findings, nutrition-related history, and comparative standards.

2. Identifies and categorizes specific nutrition diagnoses based on assessment data, prioritizing and classifying these diagnoses.

3. Develops and implements appropriate, strategically planned interventions for patients based on the best available research, evidence-based guidelines, and best practices.

4. Monitors and evaluates indicators and outcomes directly related to the nutrition diagnosis, goals, and intervention strategies to assess patient progress.

5. Adjusts the nutrition care plan as necessary.

6. Provides nutrition education and counseling to patients, family members, and caregivers as part of preventative, therapeutic, and restorative healthcare.

7. Participates in patient rounds, case discussions, and discharge planning as appropriate. Coordinates nutrition services with community organizations.

8. Attends departmental meetings, huddles, in-services, and training sessions. Engages in or leads committee activities as assigned.

9. Actively participates in or leads performance improvement projects and clinical research as assigned.

10. Assists in the orientation and training of students, dietetic interns, entry-level RDs, and new staff members as assigned. Conducts nutrition-related presentations or in-services for medical staff, residents, interns, nurses, and colleagues. Develops and evaluates nutrition education materials and resources.

11. Maintains professional development and clinical competency. Cultivates advanced knowledge and skills in a specialized area of nutrition therapy.

12. May provide on-call coverage and/or perform duties that require remote access and/or telecommuting.

13. Performs additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Experience:
1. Proven expertise in medical nutrition therapy.
2. Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in an acute care environment.
3. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
4. Proficient in using electronic medical records.
5. Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
6. Demonstrated commitment to professional development.

Education/Certification:
1. Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
2. A Master’s degree in a nutrition-related field is highly desirable.

3. Successful completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship or a Coordinated Program in Dietetics accredited by ACEND, preferably with a strong clinical component.

4. Current RD (also known as RD/N) certification from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
5. Compliance with the CDR Professional Development Portfolio requirements.

6. Specialty certification from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Society of Enteral and Parental Nutrition, or National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators is preferred as applicable to patient care assignment.
