Position Overview

The Clinical Nutrition Specialist (CNS) II represents an advanced level of practice within the field. The CNS II is actively pursuing specialty certification or enhancing advanced skills and knowledge in a specific area.

The CNS II collaborates with healthcare team members to deliver medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to adult patients, utilizing current scientific literature and best practices.

Employing the Nutrition Care Process, the CNS II conducts nutrition assessments, identifies nutrition-related issues, formulates and implements suitable interventions, and monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of these interventions.

The CNS II provides nutrition education to patients, caregivers, and family members. He/She also participates in or leads performance improvement initiatives and research projects. The CNS II serves as a mentor to dietetic interns, students, and entry-level RDs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts nutrition assessments using accurate and relevant data to identify nutrition-related issues, including anthropometrics, biochemical data, medical tests, nutrition-focused physical findings, and nutrition-related history. Identifies and categorizes specific nutrition diagnoses based on assessment data.
  • Develops and implements appropriate, strategically planned interventions for patients based on the best available research, evidence-based guidelines, and best practices.
  • Monitors and evaluates indicators and outcomes related to the nutrition diagnosis, goals, and intervention strategies to assess patient progress. Adjusts the nutrition care plan as necessary.
  • Provides nutrition education and counseling to patients, family members, and caregivers as part of preventative, therapeutic, and restorative healthcare.
  • Engages in patient rounds, case conferences, and discharge planning activities as appropriate. Coordinates nutrition services with community organizations.
  • Attends departmental meetings, huddles, in-services, and training sessions. Participates in or leads committee activities as assigned.
  • Actively engages in or leads performance improvement projects and clinical research as assigned.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of students, dietetic interns, entry-level RDs, and new staff members as assigned. Participates in nutrition-related presentations or in-services for medical staff, residents, interns, nurses, and colleagues. Develops and evaluates nutrition education materials and resources.
  • Continuously maintains professional development and clinical competency. Advances knowledge and skills in a specialized area of nutrition therapy.
  • May provide on-call coverage and/or perform work that requires remote access and/or telecommuting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Qualifications

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise in medical nutrition therapy.
  • 2+ years clinical experience in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in utilizing electronic medical records.
  • The ability to work independently or with minimal guidance.
  • Demonstrated professional development.
Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
  • Master's degree in a nutrition-related field is highly desirable.
  • Successful completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship or a Coordinated Program in Dietetics accredited by ACEND, preferably with a strong clinical component.
  • Current RD (also known as RD/N) certification confirmed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Compliance with the CDR Professional Development Portfolio requirements.
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Society of Enteral and Parental Nutrition, or National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators conferred specialty certification is preferred as applicable to patient care assignment.
