This role involves entry-level technical work focused on inspecting vehicles for hire, such as school buses and taxis, ensuring compliance with state and local safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of vehicle operating devices and mechanisms using a detailed checklist to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Inform vehicle operators about compliance status, detailing any deficiencies and the necessary steps for rectification.
  • Collect inspection fees and maintain accurate records of transactions and inspection stickers.
  • Operate and maintain various mechanical and electronic vehicle testing equipment.
  • Perform spot inspections of taxis and verify the operational permits of drivers.
  • Conduct road tests on larger vehicles, including school buses.
  • Provide technical guidance to bus contractors and vehicle-for-hire companies regarding specifications and requirements.
  • Maintain the inspection station to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the competencies required by the City of Jacksonville.
  • Carry out additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operations and basic equipment for both domestic and foreign vehicles.
  • Familiarity with state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances.
  • Understanding of inspection techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to identify defects in automotive equipment and make necessary adjustments.
  • Capability to operate and maintain testing devices and tools effectively.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and communicating effectively.
  • Ability to read and apply relevant laws, technical manuals, and work instructions.

Education and Experience:

A minimum of two years of education and/or experience in vehicle inspection or general repair and maintenance.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

  • A valid Class B Driver's License is mandatory and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • P Endorsement is required within a specified timeframe.
  • Must obtain and maintain a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
  • FL School Bus Inspectors Certification is also required within a specified timeframe.
