Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

At Houston Methodist, the Healthcare Support Specialist (HSS) role is designed for individuals who demonstrate foundational to proficient skills necessary for effective communication and execution of delegated nursing assistant tasks for a diverse patient demographic. This position aids in the provision of patient care and services under the guidance of a licensed nurse.

The HSS is responsible for conducting regular patient check-ins to ensure their needs are addressed, documenting relevant data in accordance with established protocols, and reporting any observations or patient concerns to the supervising nurse.

This role encompasses performing essential daily living activities (ADLs) within defined unit-specific parameters, including assistance with hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and mobility, while embodying the principles of Patient and Family Centered Care aligned with Houston Methodist's ICARE values.

Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team by actively sharing and reporting relevant patient care information promptly and accurately.

Patient Care Responsibilities:
Adheres to patient and family-centered care standards while providing direct patient support under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Accurately documents care provided, diagnostic measures, treatments, and procedures following established policies and principles of cultural inclusivity.

Responds to patient calls, coordinating with nursing staff as necessary, and ensures patient needs are met effectively.
Assists in the upkeep, cleaning, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies as designated for the unit. May also serve as an in-house courier for essential items.

Organizes workflow, addresses routine issues, and manages multiple priorities while seeking guidance from licensed personnel as needed.

Contributes to improving patient satisfaction scores through peer accountability practices, such as bedside handoff reports.

Quality and Safety Responsibilities:
Reports patient observations, conditions, and concerns to licensed staff to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Ensures patient privacy and safety are prioritized.
Facilitates effective hand-offs during shift changes at the patient bedside to promote collaborative care.
Conducts regular patient check-ins to ensure needs are met and reports any near misses, collaborating with the healthcare team to enhance patient safety.
Supports initiatives aimed at preventing conditions such as pressure injuries, falls, and hospital-acquired infections, contributing to overall quality and safety improvements.

Financial Responsibilities:
Assists with patient and staffing needs across the service line as competencies allow. Efficiently manages time during busy periods.
Utilizes resources effectively, focusing on cost efficiency and value creation. Self-motivated to manage time and prioritize tasks to minimize overtime while assisting colleagues as necessary.

Growth and Development Responsibilities:
Proposes innovative solutions for performance improvement initiatives and participates in shared governance activities.

Actively seeks opportunities for self-development in knowledge, skills, and decision-making, particularly in areas requiring clarification, and takes appropriate actions.

Ensures ongoing career discussions with management and regularly updates the My Development Plan.

Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent education (e.g., GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)

Experience Requirements:
Must complete one of the following:
◊ PCA externship
◊ PCA internal internship
◊ Six months of direct patient care experience
◊ Enrollment in a nursing program with completion of the first clinical rotation

Licenses and Certifications - Required:
BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

AND
CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant - State Licensure for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)/Rehab departments only

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates the competencies necessary to safely perform assigned duties, assessed through ongoing evaluations.
Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those impacting patient or employee safety.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues in a customer service-oriented manner.
Performs basic patient care activities of daily living (ADLs) within defined limits and job scope, including assistance with hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and mobility.
