The City of New Haven is seeking a highly skilled and vigilant individual to fill the role of School Crossing Safety Coordinator. This position plays a vital part in ensuring the safe transportation of school children across city streets.

About the Job:

We are looking for a proactive and effective team member to manage secure crossings, direct pedestrians, and control vehicular traffic. As a key component of our Department of Public Works, you will work closely with school bus drivers, parents, and community members to promote safe pick-ups and drop-offs.

Responsibilities:

  • School Crossing Management: Directing and assisting pedestrians at assigned intersections, controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and advising children on safe crossing times.
  • Traffic Flow Control: Maintaining control of traffic flow using signage and hand signals.
  • Special Events Support: Assisting during special events and promoting traffic calming initiatives.
  • Community Engagement: Engaging with the community to educate constituents on traffic regulations.

Requirements:

  • A strong understanding of traffic regulations and safety procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, walk, and work in various weather conditions.

Compensation and Benefits:

This full-time position offers a competitive salary of approximately $45,000 per year, contingent upon a pre-employment background check, physical examination, and drug screening. The ideal candidate should be able to work independently and demonstrate a proactive approach to their duties.
