Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Traffic Engineer Specialist to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for conducting complex traffic engineering studies, analyzing data, and developing recommendations to improve traffic flow and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies related to signs, pavement markings, traffic signals, and other traffic control devices.
  • Collect and analyze data to compile reports on study findings and recommendations.
  • Provide support for construction and maintenance programs by preparing designs and sketches for work zones, signage, pavement markings, traffic control, detours, and other improvements.
Requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles and current practices, standards, and regulations.
  • Extensive experience in conducting various traffic engineering studies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Skill in utilizing standard office and traffic engineering software.
  • Ability to lead and train others.
  • Ability to develop solutions to complex traffic issues in assigned area.
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing traffic data and developing recommendations.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and work in a fast-paced, urban environment.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in technical writing with emphasis on traffic engineering.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience working in a traffic engineering environment.
  • A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or related field desired.
  • Experience using traffic engineering software including CADD.
  • Training in traffic engineering.
