Position Overview

CSS, Inc. is in search of a skilled candidate for the role of GIS Analyst / Product Development Specialist within a collaborative research team comprised of both contract and federal personnel. This dynamic team will contribute to the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Marine Spatial Ecology Division, a prominent scientific research initiative focused on spatial ecological analysis, statistical modeling, ecological forecasting, and predictive mapping aimed at enhancing marine ecosystem management, conservation, restoration, and spatial planning.


The ideal candidate will engage in GIS data analysis, data management, and the creation of data visualization products intended for public dissemination. Responsibilities will include the development of online resources that communicate data regarding climate impacts on marine species, encompassing populations, communities, and habitats. Proficiency in GIS software (Arc Pro and Arc Online) and Python programming is essential. Candidates should possess a strong background in geospatial analysis, the creation of online data visualizations (such as publishing data, developing story maps, or dashboards), and Python programming. Familiarity with climate change issues and oceanographic principles is advantageous. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with a team of scientists from remote locations, adhere to deadlines, and work independently to achieve project milestones.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct geospatial and geostatistical analyses, integrating various datasets and manipulating data across different spatial scales.
  • Create custom, reproducible geoprocessing workflows to facilitate advanced spatial analysis.
  • Assist in the development of data visualization applications tailored to the needs of end users and clients.
  • Organize and input data into databases, ensuring meticulous records of observations, measurements, and results.
  • Generate metadata in accordance with NOAA standards.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports and other communication materials, including outreach to partners and news releases.
  • Establish and meet deadlines for timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Collaborate within a team environment and contribute to additional relevant projects as directed.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with 1-2 years of pertinent experience.
  • Preferred background in marine science.
  • Experience in data preparation, workflows, spatial processing, and online map/application development.
  • Proficient in Python for data manipulation and workflow development.
  • Skilled in using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Ability to maintain focus on routine and repetitive tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility in adapting to changes in schedules and job priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including potential long days and occasional weekends.
  • Possession of a valid US driver's license.
  • Familiarity with basic computer applications such as Excel and Word.
