Qualifications and Education

A high school diploma, vocational training, or GED equivalent is required, along with six (6) months of experience as an Animal Technician, or two (2) years of relevant experience in a comparable facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive animal husbandry in specialized environments such as quarantine, isolation, biohazard, or barrier-sustained areas.
  • Receive, identify, and appropriately house various animal species while maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist with the handling and restraint of different animal species as directed by the on-site Supervisor.
  • Inspect and manage incoming animals, ensuring the provision of sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.
  • Prepare specialized diets according to the protocols set by principal investigators, ensuring correct delivery to designated animals.
  • Participate in the training and mentorship of junior staff members.
  • Administer commonly used treatments or medications as instructed by veterinary personnel.
  • Maintain and update computer databases related to animal care.
  • Support specialized monitoring and surveillance initiatives.
  • Review and adhere to all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance standards relevant to the specific area.
  • Keep accurate records for departmental animal housing or support areas.
  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare, performing health observations and husbandry tasks to ensure the quality and well-being of research animals, including daily checks, food and water provision, and cage maintenance.
  • Order, receive, and distribute feed, bedding, and supplies while maintaining related documentation.
  • Comply with safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Operate equipment and utilize supplies following safety protocols.
  • Conduct general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary care equipment.
  • Report any issues regarding animal care equipment and environmental support systems.
  • Maintain required attendance and adhere to work schedules to ensure completion of assigned duties.
  • May provide oversight to one or more Animal Technicians.
  • Perform tasks associated with Animal Care Attendant and Animal Technician roles as necessary.
  • Assist in the maintenance of breeding programs as needed.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.
