POSITION OVERVIEW


This is a hands-on leadership role in the field of animal care, collaborating closely with the Curator and Associate Curators to guide a dedicated team of Zoologists, ensuring outstanding care for the animals within the designated section.

The Supervisor is responsible for the daily management of the section, overseeing personnel and husbandry initiatives, as well as maintaining the relevant facilities.

This role serves as the primary point of contact and liaison for the assigned section, providing mentorship, leadership, and oversight to the animal care team.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive husbandry experience with a diverse range of reptile, amphibian, and terrestrial arthropod species, including potentially hazardous animals such as crocodilians, large and/or venomous lizards, snakes, and venomous arthropods. Experience in training methodologies for reptiles is highly valued.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize, coordinate, and prioritize daily activities for the assigned section, supervising animal care staff involved in the upkeep of the animals, providing both written and verbal instructions;
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and communication of all aspects of the animal care program;
  • Establish plans for mentoring and developing team members for professional advancement and assess employee performance;

Lead by Example:
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all facets of animal training and husbandry routines;

  • Proactively identify, oversee, and engage in operant conditioning and environmental enrichment program objectives, communicating plans and requirements to Associate Curators/Curator and collaborating closely with the Associate Curator of Behavioral Husbandry regarding training goals for individual animals;
  • Monitor the behavioral management of animals through observations and interactions;
  • Delegate tasks appropriately to Assistant Supervisors and Lead Zoologists;
  • Recruit and train animal care staff in all aspects of husbandry, including diet preparation, feeding, cleaning, and exhibit maintenance;
  • Draft annual performance plans and evaluations, providing essential guidance to direct reports and reviewing performance plans throughout the year to ensure adherence to protocols and progress towards established goals;
  • Develop and uphold protocols and programs to meet and exceed industry standards;
  • Regularly observe and assess the health and welfare of animals in the area;
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all aspects of animal management, including daily behavior, breeding activities, restraint, and medical procedures;
  • Collaborate with veterinary staff on health and preventative medicine programs, reporting relevant health issues and assisting with veterinary treatments as necessary;
  • Facilitate animal propagation, sharing expertise with staff and ensuring preparedness for breeding events;
  • Coordinate and manage safe animal capture, restraint, and transfers in compliance with industry standards;
  • Ensure thorough and efficient communication with direct reports, curatorial, and veterinary staff, maintaining accurate records in all areas of responsibility;
  • Work closely with curatorial staff on institutional collection planning and animal acquisition/deacquisition;
  • Discuss behavioral management and introductions with Associate Curators/Curator as needed;
  • Ensure exhibits meet high standards of animal welfare and aesthetics, creating environments that encourage natural behaviors;
  • Regularly inspect facilities to ensure compliance with industry standards, addressing minor repairs and communicating major repair needs appropriately;
  • Adhere to all safety protocols to ensure the safety of animals, staff, and the public;
  • Document incidents and ensure team discussions occur following any incidents, addressing safety issues promptly;
  • Communicate with vendors under the direction of Associate Curators/Curator, managing equipment and supply purchases;
  • Stay informed on animal research and collaborate with other institutions and specialists;
  • Engage with zoo visitors through educational talks and represent the zoo in public presentations;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field is required; a graduate degree is preferred;

Strong Supervisory Skills Required:
Demonstrated ability to foster positive morale and productivity in the workplace;

  • Extensive knowledge of animal husbandry, with a minimum of nine years of exotic animal care experience at an accredited facility, including three years in a supervisory capacity;
  • Solution-oriented mindset, capable of finding creative solutions to complex challenges;
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in management, reproduction, and training;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of reproduction and neonate care;
  • Thorough understanding of behavioral management, including operant conditioning techniques and the benefits of environmental enrichment;
  • Broad interests in research, behavior, and conservation;
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills, both oral and written;

Technical Proficiency:
Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;

  • Ability to represent the organization professionally at all times;
  • Sound judgment in emergency situations and appropriate response actions;
  • Self-directed with the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, colleagues, and zoo guests;
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as walking, standing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs;
  • Availability to work weekends and holidays;
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions;
  • Successful candidates must pass pre-employment screenings;
  • A valid driver's license is required for operating zoo vehicles.
