Position Overview

SUMMARY: The Head of Academic Guidance is responsible for leading university-wide academic advising strategies and managing a team of professional advisors while collaborating closely with faculty mentors. This role is situated within the Center for Student Success and reports directly to the Associate Dean for Student Success. The Head of Academic Guidance is tasked with the coordination, supervision, and evaluation of undergraduate advising programs to ensure high-quality academic support for all students. This individual will develop a comprehensive advising framework based on best practices and research in student retention and success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Royal Advising model for first- and second-year undergraduate students in partnership with a faculty facilitator.
  • Supervise full-time academic advisors and enhance their effectiveness with designated student groups.
  • Organize and manage academic components of student orientation in collaboration with Student Life and faculty.
  • Design and implement a robust training program for faculty advisors in conjunction with department heads and academic deans.
  • Ensure continuous assessment of advising practices to enhance effectiveness and improve student satisfaction.
  • Address escalated advising issues and assist readmitted students in understanding their academic progress and recovery strategies.
  • Collaborate with department heads and deans to assign faculty advisors to undergraduate students with declared majors.
  • Facilitate communication regarding academic warnings and probationary statuses to students and advisors.
  • Maintain and distribute resources that help students understand their academic standing and progress.
  • Act as a resource for campus committees focused on student retention and lead initiatives aimed at improving retention.
  • Participate in the University's Student Support Team, addressing alerts related to student well-being and success.
  • Represent the Academic Advising and/or the Center for Student Success at various university events.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in university advising.
  • Proven supervisory experience and/or successful leadership in a team setting.
  • Strong commitment to student development and a passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a focus on follow-up and follow-through.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office and relevant software.
  • A Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, or a related field is required, or equivalent experience and education.
