Position Overview

SUMMARY: The Head of Academic Advising Services is responsible for leading university-wide academic advising strategies and supervising professional staff while collaborating closely with faculty advisors. This role is situated within the Center for Student Success and reports to the Associate Dean for Student Success. The Head of Academic Advising Services is tasked with the coordination, management, and evaluation of undergraduate advising programs and practices to guarantee high-quality academic support for all students. The Director will develop a holistic approach to academic advising based on best practices and research in advising, retention, and student achievement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Royal Advising initiative, Queens' model for first- and second-year undergraduate academic advising, in partnership with a faculty facilitator.
  • Supervise full-time professional advisors and enhance their effectiveness with designated student populations.
  • Coordinate academic components of student orientation in collaboration with Student Life and faculty.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive training program for faculty advisors in conjunction with department chairs, academic deans, and the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence.
  • Ensure continuous assessment of advising practices to improve effectiveness and enhance student satisfaction.
  • Manage escalated advising issues and assist readmitted students in understanding their academic progress and recovery strategies.
  • Collaborate with department chairs and deans to assign faculty advisors for undergraduate students with declared majors.
  • Facilitate communication to students and advisors regarding academic early warning, midterm alerts, and probation statuses.
  • Maintain and distribute resources that help students understand their academic standing and progress.
  • Act as a resource for campus groups and committees focused on student retention and, when appropriate, lead retention initiatives.
  • Participate in the University's Student Support Team, a collaborative group addressing alerts regarding student well-being and success.
  • Represent the Academic Advising and/or the Center for Student Success at various events as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in university advising.
  • Experience in a supervisory role or proven success as a team leader.
  • Strong commitment to student development and a passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office and relevant software.
  • A Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, coaching, or a related field is required, or equivalent experience and education.
