Optics Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer will provide technical support and continuous improvement for new and existing optics component products. The job will create, review, and update manufacturing processes and methods and initiate and implement process improvements and cost reductions. The position will also develop and maintain production-related documentation and develop cost estimates and estimating methodologies.
Key Responsibilities:- Manufacturing Process Support: Provide strong hands-on manufacturing and engineering process support for Optical fabrication and Coating areas as required.
- Equipment Operation and Troubleshooting: Operate and troubleshoot all machines / processes within Diamond Turning, CNC and Conventional Optics areas.
- Tooling and Fixturing Design: Design tooling and fixturing to support manufacturing as required.
- Metrology and Quality Assurance: Utilize various metrology equipment to evaluate components and process performance.
- Project Leadership: Lead and support projects to ensure they meet performance, schedule, and cost requirements.
- Failure Investigation and Corrective Action: Investigate production-related failures and provide corrective actions.
- Process Improvement: Initiate / lead process improvement projects.
- Process Testing and Analysis: Perform process testing, data analysis / review, root cause analysis, writing procedures and/or test plans as needed.
- Scrap Reduction and Efficiency Improvement: Focus on activities that involve scrap reduction, efficiency improvement, cost reduction, implementation of LEAN principles and others.
- Interdepartmental Collaboration: Provide support for other departments, as required, to ensure manufacturing requirements have been met.
- Communication and Collaboration: Timely communication with Department and Engineering Manager to resolve maintenance and/or production issues in a timely manner.
- Production Staff Support: Maintain proper communication with production staff as required.
- Education: B.S in Mechanical or Optical Engineering strongly preferred.
- Experience: 1 - 5 years of related engineering or optics experience strongly preferred.
- LEAN Training/Certification: LEAN training/certification a plus.
- Process Improvement Experience: Strong demonstrated experience in continual process improvements, focused on improving product quality, production effectiveness, and cost reduction.
- Software Skills: Knowledge of various software programs including Solidworks, MasterCAM, and MS Office Suite preferred.
- Fabrication Methods: First-hand knowledge of all major fabrication methods such as diamond turning, conventional grinding and polishing, CNC grinding and polishing preferred.
- Metrology Experience: Experience with metrology associated with the manufacture of spherical, aspheric, flat and beam-splitter type of component designs made from glass, IR crystals, metals and dielectrics preferred.
- Optics QA and Mil-Specs: Knowledge of optics QA and mil-specs preferred.
