Optical Engineer Position

We are seeking a highly skilled Optical Engineer to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. This position will be part of our Opto-Mechanical Systems team and will support High Energy Laser (HEL) systems and other electro-optical (EO) development programs.

The successful candidate will work closely with other engineers and scientists at Penn State and at DoD customer laboratories in the design, development, integration, and testing of optical systems. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and optimizing components for HEL, imaging, and other EO systems
  • Integrating and testing optical systems
  • Analyzing and troubleshooting optical designs
  • Modeling sensor performance in real-world optical conditions

This position will be filled at multiple levels depending on the successful candidate's education and experience. A Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline is required, with a preference for Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Imaging Science. Required skills and knowledge include:

  • Hands-on laboratory experience with optical components
  • Experience with image analysis
  • Understanding of opto-mechanics and current optics fabrication techniques
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred skills and knowledge include:

  • Optical design software packages
  • Data acquisition hardware and software
  • Laser diagnostic equipment
  • Optical metrology equipment
  • Military or operational optical systems

The salary range for this position is $76,700.00 - $129,500.00, including all possible grades. The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.
