Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Optical Engineer to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, assembling, and aligning opto-mechanical components and sub-systems for state-of-the-art High Energy Laser (HEL) and imaging systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop opto-mechanical components and sub-systems for HEL and imaging systems
  • Analyze and troubleshoot optical designs using tools such as Zemax, TracePro, and MATLAB
  • Work with mechanical engineering teams to analyze performance over temperature, vibration, and inertial loads
  • Specify optical parameters and coatings for fabrication and work with vendors on requirements and manufacture-ability
  • Conduct field testing of optical systems at sponsor facilities and outdoor test ranges
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus five years of related experience
  • Experience with optical design software packages such as Zemax, Code V, or Trace Pro
  • Familiarity with optical materials and instrumentation
  • Ability to clearly communicate and document results
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field
  • Experience with motion control systems and data acquisition hardware and software
  • Knowledge of current optics fabrication techniques and limitations

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $109,000 to $191,000 per year. The successful candidate will be subject to a government security investigation and must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
