About the Department:

The Division for Enrollment Management collaborates with the George Mason University community as part of the Office of the Provost. This division is dedicated to enhancing student recruitment and retention through the development and execution of strategic enrollment initiatives, overseeing the admissions process, providing financial aid services, and managing the Mason Student Services Center, which serves as a centralized resource for student services.

The Office of Admissions is responsible for facilitating the recruitment and enrollment of freshmen, transfer, graduate, and non-degree students, ensuring alignment with the University's strategic vision to cultivate a diverse and accomplished student body that contributes to the institution's excellence and global impact.


About the Position:

The Veteran and Dependent Benefits Coordinator plays a vital role in assisting students in accessing state and federal educational benefits. This position involves performing administrative and technical functions to enhance the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP).

The coordinator engages with military-connected individuals attending Virginia Community College System (VCCS) campuses, providing essential support and transition assistance for students pursuing pathways and transfer opportunities to George Mason University.

In addition, this role supports the daily operations of the Office of Military Services, fostering relationships and collaboration across campus to ensure a positive experience for military-connected and veteran populations.


Responsibilities:
  • Oversee daily operations of the Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP) portal.
  • Implement program protocols and ensure compliance with State Code, the Virginia Department of Veteran Services, and the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia.
  • Maintain a database and coordinate with partner offices to ensure timely processing of waivers and adjustments to financial aid awards in accordance with federal policies.
  • Utilize email and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools to manage VMSDEP and Veterans Affairs education benefits inquiries in collaboration with the Mason Student Services Center (MSSC).
  • Assist current students with benefit-related issues, seeking resolutions through interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Organize cross-campus workgroups as necessary to enhance policies and procedures related to the VMSDEP program.
  • Support initiatives aimed at persistence, retention, and graduation for VMSDEP students.
  • Provide counseling and recruitment for freshmen, transfer, and graduate students utilizing VMSDEP and Department of Veteran Services education programs.
  • Conduct presentations showcasing George Mason University and educational support services for military-connected students.
  • Develop partnerships with veterans and community organizations to enhance recruitment efforts through outreach activities, including workshops and events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with military installations and community colleges, scheduling meetings and following up with prospective students and applicants.
  • Maintain annual training requirements as a School Certifying Official for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Participate in Admissions events as required.


Required Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn procedures and train others.
  • Proficiency with technology and adaptability to new systems.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Prior military experience.
  • Experience with Enrollment Manager and the VMSDEP portal.
  • Background in higher education with knowledge of military and VA programs.
  • Experience working with student records and information systems.
  • Familiarity with admissions programs.
  • Knowledge of VMSDEP and Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits.
  • Familiarity with information technology systems used by the Department of Veterans Affairs and service branches.
