SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Accounting Manager will report directly to the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations and will oversee the accounting activities for the School Department. This role encompasses the management of both staff and grant accountants, ensuring the preparation of precise and timely monthly and annual financial statements for the district. Additionally, the position includes oversight and review of grant reports, invoices, and other specialized reports.

The Accounting Manager will coordinate external audits and provide necessary information as required.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The manager will monitor financial transactions, analyzing expenditures and revenues while performing monthly budget assessments, comparing budgeted figures to actual results, and projecting future revenues and expenditures, including salaries and benefits. The role involves quantifying all budget variances.

Establishing and overseeing procedures to ensure timely and accurate reconciliations is essential.
The manager will prepare all financial documentation for review by the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations.
Responsibilities also include reviewing and approving all journal entries and budget modifications, ensuring compliance with established policies, and performing various pre-audit tasks while cooperating with auditors and providing necessary information as directed.

Essential information for the preparation, administration, and control of the budget will be provided to the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations. The manager will also review and maintain the chart of accounts structure for all funds, act as a liaison between City Finance and the School Department regarding account reconciliation issues, and oversee the daily operations of the Business Office and its personnel, coordinating coverage for absent staff.
The manager will respond to inquiries related to the budget and report on the accounting affairs of the School Department, recommending changes and improvements as necessary.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The ideal candidate will possess substantial knowledge of accounting and expenditure control systems and procedures. The ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret complex financial data while addressing accounting challenges is crucial. The candidate should demonstrate initiative and judgment in assessing the operational needs of the department, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet various deadlines as required. Strong research, organizational, and presentation skills for both oral and written reports with appropriate recommendations are essential. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships while maintaining confidentiality in all district matters is required. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary, along with the capability to supervise assigned personnel, conduct annual performance evaluations, and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or Finance is required. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in an accounting role, including personnel supervision, is essential. Experience in government accounting is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position may require occasional extended work hours and does not qualify for remote work.
