Position Overview:

We are in search of a Research Scientist / Research Engineer to become a vital part of our Pretraining team. This role involves working at the cutting edge of research and practical engineering, contributing to the evolution of safe, controllable, and reliable AI systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in research and implement innovative solutions in model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimization techniques.
  • Independently manage smaller research initiatives while collaborating with colleagues on broader projects.
  • Design, execute, and interpret scientific experiments to enhance our understanding of large language models.
  • Refine and scale our training infrastructure to boost efficiency and dependability.
  • Enhance development tools to improve team productivity.
  • Contribute across the entire technology stack, from low-level optimizations to high-level model design.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient software engineering skills with a history of building sophisticated systems.
  • Expertise in Python and familiarity with deep learning frameworks (preferably PyTorch).
  • Understanding of large-scale machine learning, especially in relation to language models.
  • Ability to harmonize research ambitions with practical engineering limitations.
  • Strong analytical skills and a results-driven approach.
  • Excellent communication abilities and a collaborative mindset.
  • A commitment to the societal implications of your work.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with high-performance, large-scale machine learning systems.
  • Knowledge of GPUs, Kubernetes, and operating system internals.
  • Experience in language modeling using transformer architectures.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning methodologies.
  • Background in large-scale ETL processes.
