Overview:

Pharmacy Technicians operate under the guidance of Clinical Pharmacists to deliver pharmacy services with dedication, excellence, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:


• Fulfill the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for performing only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

Operational Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist Pharmacists in compiling Medication Histories.

• Provide training to Tech I associates.

• Prepare medication orders based on physician requests in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols.

• Accurately verify computerized patient medication records and maintain complete patient drug records.

• Compound pharmaceuticals, including both non-sterile and sterile products, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition products accurately.

• Dispense controlled substances to patient care areas and maintain records as mandated by law and institutional policies.

• Deliver services efficiently and in a timely manner.

• Ensure that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.

• Maintain the competency required for the current job title/position.

• Keep current technician license and ensure that applicable CE records and licensure are stored in departmental files. Attend staff meetings.

• Maintain IV certification and competencies.

• Complete all competency and skills assessment requirements.

• Specialty Area

• Act as the technician in specialized areas such as the operating room, IV room, or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.

• Ambulatory Care

• Provide ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to: anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, and Discharge Medication reconciliation.

• Retail

• Execute outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescription orders, selecting the correct medications for new and refilled prescriptions, and coordinating the delivery of medications for patient pick-up or delivery.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure safe, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapies for patients in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols.

• Accurately read, extract, and interpret information from patient medical records.

• Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and promptly.

• Support the hospital drug formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection.

• Provide accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to pharmacy associates.

• Coordinate pharmacist drug education for patients and their families per institutional protocol.

• Participate in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collect data, conduct monitoring and inspections, and maintain logs, records, and other documentation as assigned.

• Conduct designated interventions as defined in departmental Clinical Intervention activities (IV to PO, Renal Dosing, Pharmacokinetic dosing support, Anticoagulation).

• Establish baseline departmental standards for reporting interventions for clinical productivity as defined by departmental goals.

• Provide services efficiently and in a timely manner.

Occupational Hazards

• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions), as well as risks of cuts or punctures from needles and other sharp instruments.

• Risk category 0 exposure.

• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not utilized. Potential exposure to biological materials when engaging in direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).

Qualifications:

Education/Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Meet all criteria of Pharmacy Technician I.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice required.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred.
  • Completion of an ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous (minimum 40 hours); or meet minimum State requirement. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care settings or Retail settings.
