A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who operates both independently and collaboratively with a diverse range of healthcare professionals to provide exceptional, comprehensive, evidence-based anesthesia and pain management services. The CRNA is responsible for the care of patients across all acuity levels and age groups in various environments for procedures that encompass surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management interventions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct thorough pre-anesthesia assessments and evaluations of patients.
  • Secure informed consent for anesthesia and associated services.
  • Select, procure, and administer preanesthetic medications or treatments.
  • Formulate and execute a detailed anesthesia care plan.
  • Prepare and utilize equipment, both invasive and non-invasive, along with necessary monitors, supplies, and medications for the administration of sedation and anesthesia, ensuring safety checks are performed as required.
  • Administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, along with adjunctive medications, fluids, or blood products essential for anesthesia services.
  • Execute all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation.
  • Oversee patient emergence and recovery from anesthesia by assessing responses and administering appropriate medications, fluids, and ventilatory support to maintain stability during transfer.
  • Initiate and provide post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support for cardiovascular stability.
  • Implement respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation during the post-anesthesia phase.
  • Administer both acute and chronic pain management strategies.
  • Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining the course of action for patients, including airway management and administration of emergency medications and fluids, utilizing basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Uphold patient safety by adhering to established protocols and participating in safety initiatives within the facility.
  • Actively address any identified risks to patient safety.
  • Report adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management personnel.
  • Identify potential risks in processes and communicate them to relevant authorities.
  • Engage in quality assessment and assurance activities.
  • Participate in mandatory educational programs and departmental meetings.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while being proactive and resourceful.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong decision-making capabilities, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to manage the administrative demands of a diverse clinic environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Master's degree or Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia required.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) (CRNA).
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
  • Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications are mandatory.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Previous experience as a CRNA is preferred.
  • Ability to perform clinically as a nurse anesthetist within the facility.
  • Proficient in operating and interpreting data from various anesthesia equipment.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with clinical staff and other disciplines.
  • Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Familiarity with infection prevention and control techniques.
  • Capability to maintain confidentiality in record-keeping.
  • Adherence to facility policies and procedures is essential.

  • Capacity to interpret various instructions in written, oral, or schedule form.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Must effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Regular interaction with physicians and departmental personnel regarding patient information while maintaining confidentiality.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands required for this role include regular communication, standing, walking, sitting, and manual dexterity.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and repetitive motions. Team members are provided with appropriate vaccinations and safety training.
