The CRNA is responsible for the care of patients across all acuity levels and age groups in various environments for procedures such as surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct thorough pre-anesthesia assessments and evaluations of patients.
- Secure informed consent for anesthesia and associated services.
- Select, obtain, order, and administer pre-anesthetic medications or treatments.
- Formulate and execute an anesthesia care plan tailored to individual patient needs.
- Prepare and utilize necessary equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and medications for the administration of sedation and anesthesia, ensuring safety checks are performed as required.
- Administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, along with any required adjunctive medications, fluids, or blood products to deliver anesthesia services effectively.
- Manage all aspects of airway control, including fiberoptic intubation.
- Oversee patient emergence and recovery from anesthesia by assessing responses and administering medications, fluids, and ventilatory support to ensure stability during transfers.
- Initiate and provide post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support for cardiovascular stability.
- Implement respiratory support measures to guarantee adequate ventilation and oxygenation during the recovery phase.
- Apply both acute and chronic pain management strategies.
- Respond to emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining the appropriate course of action for patients, including airway management and the administration of emergency medications and fluids.
- Uphold patient safety by actively participating in safety initiatives and addressing any observed risks.
- Report adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management personnel.
- Identify potential risks in processes and communicate these to relevant authorities.
- Engage in quality assessment and assurance activities.
- Participate in mandatory educational programs and departmental meetings.
- Pursue ongoing professional development and educational growth.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work effectively under pressure while being proactive and resourceful.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, coupled with excellent decision-making abilities and meticulous attention to detail.
- Must be highly organized, adaptable, and professional, enjoying the administrative aspects of supporting a diverse patient population.
SUPERVISORY ROLE: None.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
- Master's degree or Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the relevant state.
- Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
- Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
- BLS and ACLS certifications are mandatory.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Previous experience as a CRNA is preferred.
- Capability to perform as a nurse anesthetist in a clinical setting consistently.
- Proficiency in operating and interpreting data from various anesthesia equipment.
- Effective communication skills are essential for collaboration with clinical staff and other disciplines.
- Knowledge of patient care principles across the lifespan and the ability to assess specific needs.
- Understanding of infection control practices.
- Competence in maintaining confidential records and adhering to facility policies.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Capacity to interpret various instructions provided in written, oral, or schedule formats.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
- Must effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Regular interaction with physicians and departmental personnel regarding patient information while maintaining confidentiality.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The physical demands of this role require regular communication and interaction.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and using hands for various tasks are essential.
- Specific vision abilities, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus, are necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and repetitive motions. Team members receive appropriate vaccinations and safety training.
