A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who operates both independently and collaboratively with a diverse range of healthcare professionals to provide exceptional, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain management services. The CRNA is responsible for caring for patients across all acuity levels and age groups in various environments for procedures that encompass surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Conduct thorough pre-anesthesia assessments and evaluations of patients.
  2. Secure informed consent for anesthesia and related interventions.
  3. Select, obtain, and administer pre-anesthetic medications or treatments.
  4. Develop and execute a comprehensive anesthesia care plan.
  5. Prepare and utilize equipment, both invasive and non-invasive, along with monitors, supplies, and medications for the administration of sedation and anesthesia, ensuring safety checks are performed as necessary.
  6. Order and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, as well as fluids or blood products required for anesthesia services.
  7. Manage all aspects of airway control, including fiberoptic intubation.
  8. Facilitate patient emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating responses and administering necessary medications, fluids, and ventilatory support to ensure stability during transfer.
  9. Initiate post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support for cardiovascular stability.
  10. Provide respiratory support to guarantee adequate ventilation and oxygenation during the recovery phase.
  11. Implement strategies for acute and chronic pain management.
  12. Handle emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining the course of action for patients, including airway management and administration of emergency medications and fluids.
  13. Contribute to patient safety through active participation in safety initiatives and by addressing observed risks.
  14. Report adverse events and near misses to the appropriate authorities.
  15. Identify potential risks in processes and communicate these to relevant personnel.
  16. Engage in quality assessment and assurance activities.
  17. Participate in mandatory educational programs and departmental meetings.
  18. Pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to work effectively under pressure while being proactive and resourceful.
  2. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  3. Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills, decision-making capabilities, and attention to detail.
  4. Demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to manage the administrative demands of a diverse clinical environment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
  1. Master's degree or Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia.
  2. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
  3. Graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
  4. Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  5. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
  1. Previous experience as a CRNA is preferred.
  2. Ability to perform clinical duties as a nurse anesthetist in a facility setting regularly.
  3. Proficiency in operating and interpreting data from various anesthesia equipment.
  4. Effective communication skills for collaboration with clinical staff and other disciplines.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care tailored to the patient population served.
  6. Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  7. Knowledge of infection control practices.
  8. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records.
  9. Adherence to facility policies and procedures.
REASONING ABILITY:
  1. Capability to solve practical problems and address various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  2. Ability to interpret diverse instructions provided in written, oral, or scheduled formats.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
  1. Must effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  2. Regular interaction with physicians and departmental personnel regarding patient information while ensuring confidentiality.
