A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who operates both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team of healthcare professionals to provide exceptional, comprehensive, evidence-based anesthesia and pain management services. The CRNA is responsible for the care of patients across various acuity levels and age groups in multiple environments for procedures that encompass surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management interventions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct thorough pre-anesthesia assessments and evaluations of patients. Secure informed consent for anesthesia and associated services. Select, procure, and administer preanesthetic medications or treatments. Formulate and execute an individualized anesthesia care plan. Prepare and utilize equipment, both invasive and non-invasive, along with necessary supplies and medications for sedation and anesthesia, ensuring safety checks are performed as required. Order and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, as well as any adjunctive medications, fluids, or blood products essential for anesthesia services. Execute all facets of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation. Oversee patient emergence and recovery from anesthesia by assessing responses and managing medications, fluids, and ventilatory support to ensure stability during transfers. Initiate and manage post-anesthesia cardiovascular support. Provide respiratory support to guarantee adequate ventilation and oxygenation during the recovery phase. Implement both acute and chronic pain management strategies. Respond to emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining the appropriate course of action for patients, including airway management and administration of emergency medications and fluids. Uphold patient safety through active participation in safety initiatives and by addressing any observed risks. Report adverse events and near misses to the relevant management authorities. Identify potential risks in processes and communicate these to the appropriate personnel. Engage in quality assessment and assurance activities. Participate in mandatory educational programs and departmental meetings. Pursue ongoing professional development opportunities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work effectively under pressure while being proactive and resourceful. Maintain confidentiality at all times. Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with excellent decision-making capabilities and attention to detail. Must be highly organized, adaptable, and exhibit professionalism while managing the administrative challenges of a diverse clinical environment.

SUPERVISORY ROLE: None.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:

Master's degree or Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia required. Current licensure as an RN and APRN (CRNA). Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program. Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists is mandatory. BLS and ACLS certifications are required.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Previous experience as a CRNA is preferred. Capability to perform clinically as a nurse anesthetist in a facility setting. Proficiency in operating and interpreting data from various anesthesia equipment. Effective communication skills are essential for collaboration with clinical staff and other disciplines. Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan and the ability to assess patient needs accordingly. Understanding of infection control techniques. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and adhere to facility policies.

REASONING ABILITY:

Competence in solving practical problems and managing a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret diverse instructions in written, oral, or scheduled formats.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Frequent interaction with physicians and departmental personnel regarding patient information while ensuring confidentiality.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
